*U.S. stocks ended lower Friday, trimming losses into the close but still booking big weekly losses, after a warning from FedEx Corp. rattled investors amid ongoing worries that another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve next week heightens recession risks. The dollar is poised for its best week in a month.*

Risk-off sentiment went from simmer to boil in the wake of FedEx Corp's withdrawal of its earnings forecast late Thursday, citing signs of dampening global demand.

FedEx's move followed remarks from the World Bank and the IMF, both of which warned of an impending worldwide economic slowdown.

*Financial markets have priced in a 18% likelihood of a super-sized, 100 basis point increase to the Fed funds target rate on Wednesday, according to CME's FedWatch tool.*

*Dow Transports, viewed as a barometer of economic health, plummeted 5.1%.*

Dip buyers emerged in afternoon trading, with gains in some big tech names including Nvidia Corp. and Intel Corp.

*For the week, the Dow fell 4.1%, while the S&P 500 dropped 4.8% drop and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 5.5%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each saw their biggest weekly percentage drops since June, while the Dow had its worst week since the stretch ending Aug. 26.*

*Volume on U.S. exchanges was 16.92 billion shares, compared with the 10.72 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.*

*What drove the market?*

U.S. stocks ended down Friday, deepening losses for the week amid heightened fears of a recession.

*FedEx Corp.’s profit warning late Thursday is a sign of a slowing economy, said Michael Landsberg, an expert. Landsberg, who is expecting a “hard landing” for the U.S. economy as the Federal Reserve keeps tightening its monetary policy, said “I would not be buying the equity dip in the U.S. or in Europe.”*

*FedEx shares plunged 21.4% after the global shipper and economic bellwether late Thursday withdrew its annual outlook and forecast sharply lower quarterly profit and lower revenue. The news put pressure on other shipping stocks and dented overall investor sentiment, analysts said, as FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam told CNBC late Thursday that the global economy was likely headed for a recession.*

“The fact that FedEx expects the US economy to enter into a recession has made traders trade carefully, and there aren’t many who are willing to buy the market. It is highly likely that we will see a similar message from other companies in the coming days as well, and that may make the overall sentiment even more adverse.
*Another blow came from General Electric Co., whose shares fell 3.7% after the company’s chief financial officer Carolina Happe said at an investor conference that continued supply-chain pressures were putting the conglomerate under pressure.*

“Investors should worry about a recession” and their positioning for it, said Landsberg. He said that he likes the healthcare, utilities, consumer staples sectors in the U.S. and discount retailers such as Dollar General Corp DG, +1.22%.

*Many analysts have trimmed their forecasts for company earnings for the third quarter.* *According to data from FactSet, earnings growth expectations for the S&P 500 index stand at an increase of 3.7% for the third quarter, down sharply from expectations of 9.8% growth at the end of June.*

Analysts have cut third-quarter earnings expectations over the last 2-3 months for every sector in the S&P 500 except energy, and seven out of 11 sectors in the index are now expected to show outright year-over-year declines in earnings, compared with only three in the second quarter.

Equity markets took an abrupt pivot lower this week after hotter-than-expected inflation data spurred traders to ratchet up wagers for rate hikes and sparked the worst one-day stock selloff in two years. Since then swaps continue to price in a 75 basis-point hike when the Fed meets next week -- with some wagers leaning toward a full point -- and policy-sensitive two-year yields have climbed this week to the highest level since 2007, deepening the curve inversion that’s seen as a recession signal.

*The US is probably at the gate of a recession of an unknown depth -- equities see it as very limited, credit markets as contained while the 2-10 slope expects a more dire situation*

*Investors have endured a tough week that included the worst one-day losses since June 2020 for stock markets on Tuesday after a surprise jump in U.S. consumer price inflation in August that has many nervously looking toward next week’s Fed meeting. Some forecasts are even calling for a 100 basis-point rate hike next week.*

*The stock market has further to fall, as “equity markets are not priced for a recession,” according to Alessio de Longis, senior portfolio manager at Invesco. He said in a phone interview Friday that he expects a recession in the next 12 months as the Fed aggressively hikes rates to bring down inflation.*

*In economic data released Friday, the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index rose to 59.5 in September and hit a five-month high, reflecting public relief at falling gasoline prices. The survey found consumers still think inflation will fall sharply in the long run.*

*The University of Michigan survey showed US long-term inflation expectations fell to the lowest in more than a year in early September, with consumers expecting prices will climb at an annual rate of 2.8% over the next five to 10 years, the lowest since July 2021. That’s down from 2.9% in the prior month. They see costs rising 4.6% over the next year, the lowest since last September.*

Consumer sentiment is “off the lows,” said de Longis, “but it remains at deep recessionary levels.”

Meanwhile, the CBOE Volatility Index VIX, +0.11% climbed above 26 Friday, according to FactSet data. That compares with a 50-day moving average of 23.6.

“We’re starting to get back to some elevated levels,” Landsberg said. But “it’s still not to where I would say there’s a lot of fear in the market.

Market volatility could be exacerbated Friday from the quarterly expiry event known as triple witching, with contracts for stock index futures, stock index options and stock options all expiring, while re-balancing of major equity indexes also takes place.

It’s been a tough week. It feels like Halloween came early. We are facing in this toxic brew of high inflation, high interest rates and low growth, which isn’t good for stock or bond markets.
On the technical side, the S&P 500’s pivot below a key Fibonacci retracement of June-August rally, suggests stocks could revisit June lows. It really reflects the ongoing repricing of risk assets in a world of tighter and tighter liquidity. Equities, EM, risk all benefited from years of zero interest rates and now we are seeing the other side of that trade. Bottom line: further losses likely in risk assets.

FedEx’s warning comes as companies across industries start to paint a grimmer picture of the economy. Bank of America Corp.’s Michael Hartnett said an earnings recession will likely drive US stocks to new lows, well below current levels.

Traders briefly priced the Fed’s key policy rate peaking at 4.5% in March this week as the central bank escalates its effort to contain inflation. That expected peak was up by a full percentage point since the Fed’s last policy meeting in July.

*A tough year in markets is leading some investors to seek refuge in cash, as they capitalize on higher interest rates and await chances to buy stocks and bonds at cheaper prices.*

The Federal Reserve has roiled markets in 2022 as it implements huge rate hikes in an effort to moderate the steepest inflation in 40 years. But higher rates are also translating into better rates for money market funds, which had returned virtually nothing since the pandemic began in 2020.

That’s made cash a more attractive hideout for investors seeking shelter from market gyrations - even though the highest inflation in forty years has dented its appeal.

Fund managers increased their average cash balances to 6.1% in September, the highest level in more than two decades, a widely followed survey from BofA Global Research showed.

Investors are looking to next week's Fed meeting, at which the central bank is expected to enact another jumbo rate hike, following this week's consumer price index report that came in hotter than expected.

*Of course, sitting in cash has its drawbacks, including the possibility of missing a sudden reversal that takes prices for stocks and bonds higher. Inflation, which stood at 8.3% on an annual basis last month, has also dented the appeal of cash.*

While an obvious sign of caution among investors, extreme levels of cash are sometimes viewed as a so-called contrarian indicator that bodes well for equities,

This week’s mixed economic numbers, hot inflation reading and FedEx warning have brought the dreaded prospect of “stagflation” back into view. The term typically refers to the 1970s, when the U.S. economy suffered from low growth and persistently high inflation for much of the decade.

*However, Goldman Sachs still sees a “soft landing” as a possibility, and Goldman’s Chris Hussey wrote on Friday that the economy hasn’t stagnated just yet, even after negative readings for GDP to start the year.*

“In the same month that Fed Ex warned global shipments fell (August), the US added 315,000 net new non-farm payroll jobs and the unemployment rate rose only 20bp to a still ultra-low 3.7%. Importantly, wage inflation remains high but it did slow from July’s pace. The US labor market is just not exhibiting many signs of ‘stag,’” Hussey said.

*Goldman Sachs rate strategists expect the U.S. 10-year yield to peak at 4% by the end of 2023, and the 2-year at 4.3% by the second quarter.*

The benchmark 10-year yield was lower at 3.44% Friday afternoon. The 2-year yield was at 3.85%, after rising above 3.9% earlier in the day.

Goldman Sachs strategists had previously expected a high this year of 3.3% in the 10-year but changed that forecast to 3.75% due to higher expectations for Federal Reserve rate hikes.

Goldman Sachs strategists had previously expected a high this year of 3.3% in the 10-year but changed that forecast to 3.75% due to higher expectations for Federal Reserve rate hikes.

*Asia-Pacific shares fell Friday, with the Shanghai Composite 2.3% lower, despite China’s industrial production and retail sales figures for August beating expectations.*
*Europe’s benchmark share gauge fell for a fourth day of losses, with mail and parcel delivery companies taking a hit after FedEx’s warning. The UK’s benchmark outperformed as the British pound sank to its weakest level against the dollar since 1985.*

The British pound dropped below $1.14 for the first time since 1985 as a combination of dollar strength and recession warnings weighed on the U.K.’s currency.

The World Bank on Thursday warned of a global recession in 2023 and said central bank hiking may not be enough to bring down inflation.

*Which companies were in focus?*
• Shares of FedEx rival United Parcel Service Inc. slid 4.5%, while retailers such as Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, -2.18% and Target Corp. TGT, -0.56% also finished lower. FedEx’s gloom spread overseas with Deutsche Post AG DPW, -6.58% and Royal Mail PLC RMG, -8.08% both tumbling.

National Logistics Policy

Key highlights TG @AlliesFin

👉 Aim to reduce logistics cost from 13-14 percent to single-digit as soon as possible

👉 Schemes like Sagarmala, Bharatmala, Dedicated Freight Corridors would improve logistics connectivity drastically.

👉 The total capacity of Indian ports has increased significantly and the average turn-around time of container vessels has come down from 44 hours to 26 hours.

👉 Initiatives like paperless EXIM trade process through e-sanchit, faceless assessment for customs, provisions for e-way bills, FASTag etc. have greatly increased the efficiency of the logistics sector.

👉 Unified Logistics Interface Platform- ULIP will bring all the digital services related with the transportation sector on a single portal.

👉 Similarly, under the policy a new digital platform for Ease of logistics Services -E-Logs has also been started. Through this portal, industry associations can directly take up any such matters which are causing problems in their operations and performance with the government agencies.

👉 Gatishakti and National Logistics Policy together are now taking the country towards a new work culture.

This Policy is focused towards development of support infrastructure, reduction of system inefficiencies and high usage of technology to cut costs. We believe with better tracking and digitization the industry would move faster towards being more organized. This would benefit the organized players in this space.

@AlliesFin

Someone needs to do some research as to how this Monday comes back so soon?

A thought on investing.

If you are truly bullish on India and want to create Alpha, you MUST stick to Midcap and Smallcaps.

The 'Size Anomaly' + 8% GDP growth factor.

So basically think for yourself, are you long term bullish on India where you think that the Indian GDP will grow 7-8% for the next 5-10 years?

If yes, then its just WRONG to buy largecap defensives.

Because, if the GDP fires at 7-8%, then there will be ample opportunity for small sized players to grow and due to their small profit base, their growth will be exceptional in some cases.

Hence, if we are right on the assumption that Indian GDP will grow at 7-8%, then buying midcap and smallcaps will result in 'strong earnings growth + rerating as size grows'.

I am sure that a lot of investors do NOT realize this but when they buy a stock trading at 50-80x P/E with 12-13% growth, they are basically 'Bearish' on India.Because, if the Indian GDP grew just 3-4%, then opportunities will be limited for smaller sized companies and only the very large players will gain market share.

('Big will become bigger' - something which happened in 2018-19 briefly).

Conclusion:Bullish on India and want to make Alpha - Buy midcap and smallcaps which will give growth + rerating.Bearish on India and want to make Alpha - Buy very largecap defensive.

About timing your market entry. Well, just DON'T do this. The FED first said that inflation is transitory, then they adamantly stuck to their guidance like a newbie trader which holds to his loss making position in fear of making loss.

The FED then became inflation hawks all of a sudden and now are busy raising interest rates while this inflation clearly is caused by Supply issues and nothing else.

Basically, if the sophisticated FED cannot predict inflation over 1-2 year period and neither should you bother about doing the same.

As we know, India will sell more Burgers every year for the next 20 years. And I am pretty sure it will be the same for Fans, Computers, UPI transactions etc.
