*U.S. stocks end lower after jobs data, as S&P 500 suffers its longest losing streak since 2011: Stocks extend Thursday selloff*
*All three major U.S. stock benchmarks closed lower Friday, each booking another week of losses, as investors weighed April jobs data amid heightened stagflation fears. The S&P 500 fell for a fifth straight week, its longest losing streak since June 2011, according to Dow Jones Market Data.*
*Volatility continued to dominate financial markets, with stocks pushing lower as the latest U.S. jobs data cemented expectations the Federal Reserve will remain on its rate-hike path to combat stubbornly high inflation.*
*At the end of a week marked by fickle trading, quick reversals and heightened anxiety, the S&P 500 failed to stay in the green and fell to its lowest level in about a year. The gauge posted its fifth straight weekly drop -- the longest losing streak since June 2011. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperformed. Treasury 10-year yields remained above 3%, while the dollar rose. Gasoline futures in New York settled at a record high.*
Tech stocks were again an area of weakness for the market on Friday. Amazon fell 1.4%, while Microsoft and Nvidia dropped about 0.9%. Netflix and Crowdstrike fell 3.9% and 8.9%, respectively.
Speculative areas of the market such as biotech and solar energy were hit hard on Friday. Illumina dropped more than 14%, while Enphase Energy fell 8.4%.
On Thursday, the Dow industrials slumped 1,063.09 points, or 3.1%, its worst daily percentage drop since Oct. 28, 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The S&P 500 fell 3.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 5% for its worst daily percentage fall since June 11, 2020.
*For the week, the Dow and S&P 500 each slipped 0.2% while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 1.5%. Both the Nasdaq and S&P 500 fell for a fifth straight week, while the Dow dropped for a sixth consecutive week, according to Dow Jones Market Data.*
*Volume on U.S. exchanges was 13.49 billion shares, compared with the 12.10 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.*

*What drove markets?*
Major U.S. stock benchmarks fell Friday to book weekly losses, after scoring big gains earlier in the week.
“It’s been a confusing and erratic market, to say the least, this week,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services, in a phone interview Friday. “We have somewhat of a fickle market right now.”
*The big gains in Wednesday’s relief rally, which was sparked by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks that a large interest rate hike of 75 basis points was not being actively considered by the Fed, have been erased amid concerns the central bank may not be doing enough to bring inflation under control, according to Lerner. Investors are worried that inflation will stay at an elevated level, forcing the Fed to become more aggressive in a slowing economy, he said.*
*But Friday’s employment report should “ease some concerns” that a recession may be looming, according to Lerner, who said he is not expecting a recession in the next 12 months. Even if the economy is slowing, “at least we have some momentum,” he said.*
*The U.S. economy added 428,000 new jobs in April, according to a report Friday from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But an acute labor shortage showed little improvement last month, which could underline worries about inflation already running its hottest in 40 years. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast 400,000 new jobs.*
*The unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.6%, the government said Friday, just above a 54-year low. Average hourly earnings cooled, rising 0.3% in April versus expectations for a 0.4% increase.*
*The jobs report “has something for everyone…steady job gains supporting economic growth with less wage pressure, possibly easing inflation fears,” said John Lynch, chief Investment officer for Comerica Wealth Management.*
*Nonfarm payrolls climbed 428,000 in April, yet a smaller labor force may put pressure on employers to boost wages to bring workers back. That dynamic may complicate the central bank’s fight to tame inflation as officials try to bring labor demand in line with supply. The participation rate -- the share of the population that’s working or looking for work -- sank. While average hourly earnings fell short of estimates on a monthly basis, they were up 5.5% from a year earlier.*
*One weak area of the report was the labor force participation rate, which was little changed month over month and remains 1.2 percentage points below its pre-pandemic level. Economists believe that a recovery in participation could help stem the rise in wages and, by extension, inflation.*
*Elsewhere in economic data, the Fed’s consumer credit data showed an increase of $52.4 billion in March, more than double what economists expected, according to Dow Jones.*
“Investors need confidence that the Fed won’t raise too aggressively and topple the economy into recession in their fight against inflation. Today’s report is balanced and may prove to dampen the extreme volatility of recent days,” he wrote.
*“The widely anticipated relief rally seen in equities and bonds post the ‘less hawkish than feared’ Fed on Wednesday was short lived,” Barclays strategist Emmanuel Cau said in a note to clients. “Although aggressive 75bp hikes going forward may be off the table, the implied policy tightening cycle ahead is still very hawkish, in our view. Unless surging inflation quickly reverses its course (watch US CPI print next Wednesday), central banks may have no other choice than slowing growth to slow inflation and stay credible.”*
*Comments:*
# A further drop in the participation rate “could exacerbate the labor supply shortage, resulting in further wage pressures that will inevitably flow through to broad-based inflation,” said Peter Essele, head of portfolio management at Commonwealth Financial Network. “The Fed will surely speed up the pace of tightening if the participation rate continues to decline amid a robust hiring backdrop.”

For the Fed, there is nothing in today’s report to suggest they can take their foot off the brake.”
# “The story here is the participation rate. It didn’t rise, it fell, which is counter to what the Fed is looking for in order to get the demand of labor up,” said Steve Chiavarone, portfolio manager and head of multi-asset solutions at Federated Hermes. “In addition, wage inflation remains elevated.”
# “No big surprises from today’s jobs report -- it largely confirms that the labor market remains tight, affording the Fed the flexibility to tackle its price stability mandate head-on,” Jason Pride, chief investment officer of private wealth at Glenmede.
# “The Fed likely won’t be swayed from its rate hike campaign,” said Mike Loewengart, managing director of investment strategy at E*Trade from Morgan Stanley. “Since numbers came in mostly in line with expectations, the market may have already priced in a robust jobs read.”
# The global market selloff that saw the S&P 500 post its worst first four months of a year since 1939 has further to run, according to Bank of America Corp. strategists led by Michael Hartnett. “Base case remains equity lows, yield highs yet to be reached,” they wrote in a note to clients.
# In the view of Ryan Belanger, founder of Claro Advisors, the central bank is “behind where they need to be on raising interest rates.” He said by phone Friday that “there’s a case to be made to rip the band-aid off and cool down this inflation.”
# Under Armour Inc slumped 23.8% after the sportswear maker forecast downbeat fiscal 2023 profit. Shares of rival Nike Inc also slipped.
# Coinbase Global Inc dropped 9% on Friday to the lowest level since the cryptocurrency exchange's 2021 stock market debut.
*During a discussion at the Carlson College School of Management on Friday, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari pushed back on views of many hawkish commentators that the Fed is way behind in the battle to control inflation. Kashkari said the Fed’s forward guidance has succeeded in pushing longer-term rates, adjusted for inflation, up close to a neutral level.*
Major U.S. stock-market indexes ended the week with small losses, which belies volatile action seen in recent days.
*A sharp drop in first-quarter U.S. productivity data and a rise in unit labor costs published Thursday were also cited as factors in the market’s drop that day, underlining stagflation fears. That rubs against the assertion by Powell and other senior Fed officials that they can achieve a so-called soft landing — lowering inflation without bringing economic growth to a grinding halt.*
*“What’s dangerous about yesterday’s huge market slump is that there must be an element of doubting the ability of there to be an effective ‘Fed Put’ in this cycle following a 30-40 year period where the central bank has almost always been able to come to the market’s rescue,” said a team of Deutsche Bank strategists led by Jim Reid.*
Heightened volatility will probably persist as the market is “trying to figure out where interest rates are going to settle,” according to Claro’s Belanger.
*Meanwhile, yields on 10- and 30-year Treasury bonds hovered at levels last seen in 2018, which they reached Thursday as stocks plunged.*
*The 10-year yield rose 5.8 basis points on Friday to 3.124%, the highest level since Nov. 13, 2018 based on 3 p.m. Eastern Time levels, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Rising rates are pressuring stocks.*
*Most traders are expecting a 75 basis-point hike at the U.S. central bank's June meeting, despite Fed chief Jerome Powell's ruling that out.*
*All eyes are on the monthly consumer price index inflation report on Wednesday, as investors seek clues to whether the economy is nearing a peak in inflation.*
