Reliance Industries (RIL) is undergoing a demerger. Reliance runs multiple businesses including Reliance Strategic Investments Ltd., which is getting demerged from RIL & is going to be named as Jio Financial Services Ltd (JFS)
2841.85 which is the closing price of Reliance yesterday reflects the value of all the business within Reliance. But if one of the businesses has to be hived off (demerged) how is the value for the demerged entity or for that matter the remaining part of the Reliance business determined?
Today between 9 am & 10 am there is going to be a separate pre open session for RIL price discovery. The reference rate will be yesterdays closing. If JFS is getting demerged from Reliance, the price of Reliance shares should fall because currently the share price includes the value of JFS as a business which is not going to be a part of Reliance going forward. Hence assume if in the pre open, RIL stock falls to 2641.85, the JFS share will be valued at 200 (2841.85 - 2641.85)
So will the Nifty index fall because Reliance will fall from 2841.85 to 2641.85 and that Reliance is such a big weight in the index?
- Theoretically No. To avoid any impact on the index, JFS will be listed as the 51st share on Nifty & be given weight accordingly that Reliance + JFS will still be the same weight & same price that Reliance was as of yesterdays closing.
- Till 10 am Nifty’s actually price quoted will consider Reliance at yesterdays closing price & the remaining 49 stocks & live prices.
- Post 10 am when the pre open will end, only the Reliance industry stock will trade & JFS will stay constant. The movement in RIL post 10 am will only impact the NIFTY like normal days as JFS will be constant.
- JFS will be removed from the index after 3 days & Reliance’s weight will be adjusted back. This will be done in all the indices that Reliance is a part off.
