. โšœ Grammar Lesson โšœ ๐Ÿ”Š Articles ๐Ÿ”Š ๐Ÿ”ด What Are Articles? Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. Consider the following examples: ๐Ÿ’ญ After the long day, the cup of tea tasted particularlyโ€ฆ
.                โšœ Grammar Lesson โšœ

                         ๐Ÿ”Š Articles ๐Ÿ”Š

๐Ÿ”ด The Indefinite Article

๐Ÿ”ธ Uncountable nouns are nouns that are either difficult or impossible to count. Uncountable nouns include intangible things (e.g., information, air), liquids (e.g., milk, wine), and things that are too large or numerous to count (e.g., equipment, sand, wood). Because these things canโ€™t be counted.

๐Ÿ”ธ The indefinite article is only for singular nouns. Uncountable nouns can be modified by words like some, however.

๐Ÿ”” Example ๐Ÿ””

โŒ Please give me a water.

๐Ÿ”บWater is an uncountable noun and should not be used with the indefinite article.

โœ…  Please give me some water.
ใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐใ€ฐ
๐Ÿ”ธ However, if you describe the water in terms of countable units (like bottles), you can use the indefinite article.

๐Ÿ”” Example ๐Ÿ””

โœ… Please give me a bottle of water.

โŒ Please give me an ice.

โœ… Please give me some ice.

๐Ÿ”บNote that depending on the context, some nouns can be countable or uncountable (e.g., hair, noise, time):

๐Ÿ’ญ We need a light in this room.

๐Ÿ’ญ We need some light in this room.

๐Ÿ“– English grammar can seem quite easy compared to some languages, but a small mistake can easily change the meaning of what you want to say.

๐Ÿ“ So here are some important rules that you should keep in mind when you speak and write English.

1๏ธโƒฃ ๐Ÿ”ธAdjectives and ๐Ÿ”นadverbs:
Make sure you use adjectives and adverbs correctly.
๐Ÿ”ธAdjectives describe, identify and quantify people or things and usually go in front of a noun.
๐Ÿ”ธThey donโ€™t change if the noun is plural.
๐Ÿ”นAdverbs modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs and usually come after the verb.

For example:
โœ… Heโ€™s a slow driver. (adjective)
โœ… He drives slowly. (adverb)

โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”

2๏ธโƒฃ Use the correct conjugation of the verb:
Remember to change the verb to agree with the subject. The main subjects you need to be careful with are he, she and it because they have a different form to the others.

For example:
โœ… She has two cats.
โŒ She have two cats.

Remember also that when you describe something using โ€˜There is/areโ€™, the verb must agree with the first item you mention.

For example:
โœ… There is a sofa, some chairs and a table. [Singular]
โœ… There are some chairs, a table and a sofa. [Plural]

โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”

3๏ธโƒฃ Connect your ideas with conjunctions:
If you want to connect two ideas or short phrases, you can do so by using a conjunction.

For example:
โœ… Iโ€™m studying English. English is important. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
โœ… Iโ€™m studying English because English is important.

The most common conjunctions are:
and โ€“ [addition]
because โ€“ [to give the reason]
but โ€“ [to express contrast]
so โ€“ [to describe a consequence]
or โ€“ [to describe an alternative]

โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”

4๏ธโƒฃ Never use a double negative:
In English there are often two ways to express a negative concept.

For example:
If you want to say โ€œthe room is emptyโ€, you can say:
โœ… There is nothing in the room. OR There isnโ€™t anything in the room.

The words โ€˜nothingโ€™ and โ€˜anythingโ€™ have the same meaning, but โ€˜nothingโ€™ is used with an affirmative verb, and โ€˜anythingโ€™ is used with a negative verb.

This rule applies to other words like:
ใ€ฐ๏ธ nobody โ€“ anybody
ใ€ฐ๏ธ none โ€“ any

This is also true of the word โ€˜neverโ€™ when you talk about experience.
You can say:
โœ… Heโ€™s never been to the U.S. OR He hasnโ€™t ever been to the U.S.

The meaning is the same but in the second sentence the use of โ€˜everโ€™ means you need to make the verb negative.
