*Daitya Sudan Temple โ€“ Lonar*

Daitya Sudan Temple is a mighty impressive temple located in the heart of the Lonar town in Buldhana district-Maharastra.This beautiful Lord Vishnu temple has been dated to the reign of the Chalukya Dynasty who ruled Central & Southern India between 6th and 12th century AD.

Daitya Sudan Temple measures 105 ft. long by 84.5 ft. broad. It is a tree chamber temple, the inner most being garbhagriha, the sanctum sanctorum, where the idol of Lord Vishnu standing atop Lavanasur is there. The present day idol was made by Bholse rulers of Nagpur after the original went missing. The second chamber is called "antaral" where individual puja was performed on the roof of this block one can see beautiful cravings of Puranic stories. The killing of Lavanasur by Lord Krishna and appearance of Dhar of Lonar; story of Kansa and Krishna, story of Narasimha and Hiranya Kashyap and lastly raskrida are portrayed in the stone architecture.

Daitya Sudan Temple belongs to the Hemadpanthi class and is built in the form of an irregular star. Daitya Sudan Temple features carvings similar to those seen at Khajuraho temples.

*History*

Lord Vishnu is said to have come down to this place in the form of a young, handsome boy called Daityasudan to slay Lonasura or Lavanasura, the demon who lived under the Earth in this area along with his sisters. Daitya Sudan killed the demon in a battle which ended up in creating the Lonar Lake.

The standing idol of God Surya is placed in the principal niche on the back of the temple. This further gives rise for an assumption that the temple was originally dedicated to the Sun god. However, in the present form, it is a Vaishnava temple of Lord Vishnu in his Daitya Sudan avatar.

The silence, emptiness of human existence in the vast himalayan landscape around teertha is soul nourishing.
This sculpture here is called Chakra-dhyana murti where Maha Vishnu is worshipping Bhagwan Shiva, who later presents him with the Sudarshan chakra. Inside carving in Airavateshwara Temple in Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu.
Mata Ganga Temple, Haridwar
This is the most famous of Devi temples in the town. Ganga enters the plains from Devbhumi here and hence it is also called Gangadwar. Located almost at the edge of Ganga near Brahmakund, it is a really small temple with an idol of Ganga. In scriptures, Ganga is a Devi in Dravya or liquid form. Here she is the prime Goddess whom the pilgrims come to meet.
There is no greater motivation for a Hindu pilgrim than to take a dip in Holy Ganga in this holy town and at Ganga in Kashi.
In fact, most temples here have an idol of Ganga somewhere, making her look omnipresent on land surrounding the river.
The Largest Deity of Garuda, Srirangam

Srirangam Temple is the only temple to have the largest deity of Garuda which is more than 25 ft tall. It takes 30 mts of cloth to make a dhoti for Garuda. He appears in a majestic form ready to take off with the Lord.

Sri Dakshin Kali Mandir, Chandi Ghat, Haridwar
This Kali temple is located almost in the wilderness, next to Chandi Ghat and on the banks of Ganga where it is known as Neeldhara. The Ganga gently flows southwards and this is why this temple is called Dakshin Kali (Dakshin is South in Sanskrit). The temple is small and its premises a little bigger than the temple. Marble Lion seems a recent addition. The idol in black seems old, how old is difficult to judge โ€“ but then it hardly matters. The specialty of this temple is that the Pooja is done at the midnight here when Ma Kali is offered Khichadi.
An elaborate board tells us that this is the place where Shiva drank the poison that came out of Samudra Manthan or churning of the ocean. After drinking it and holding it in his throat, he felt the immense heat, and he took bath in the Ganga here โ€“ giving it the name Neeldhara. Shiva, as we know, is also called Neelkanth for holding the blue poison in his throat. The board further tells you all the rituals and their dates as per the Indian calendar at the temple.
For the followers of Devi, this is the first Siddhapeeth of 10 Peethas of Dash Mahavidyas.

Katakeswari Chandi Mandir, one of the oldest temples in Odisha, attracts more than 20 lakh devotees a year. Here, Goddess Kata Chandi is worshipped and she is considered the presiding deity of the Silver City. The fifth generation of the first priest of the temple still continues to perform the daily rituals of the Goddess. Although there is no written history of the temple, the story goes that the late Hansa Panda, who was the Purohit of the then Kanika Raja of Cuttack, used to graze cattle and sheep in the land. One day Panda was feeling tired and took rest there. On the same night, the Goddess Katakeswari Chandi appeared in his dream and requested him to take her out of the land. He narrated the incident to the Kanika king who ordered his workers to dig up the place.

Subsequently, 40 bullock carts of red sindoor and an idol were found. The idol is being worshipped as Goddess Katak Chandi since then. Locals worship the Goddess as a Living Goddess. Durga Puja is a major festival celebrated in the temple when the Goddess is worshipped in various incarnations of Goddess Durga. Durga Puja is celebrated in temple for 16 days starting from Ashwina Krishna Ashtami till Ashwina Shukla Navami and Vijayadashami. Only Hindus are allowed in the temple and the best time to visit is during Dussehra.
