*Tiruttani Subramanya Swamy Temple*

Subramanya Swamy Temple is a Hindu temple, on the hill of Tiruttani, Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Murugan. The hill has 365 steps indicating 365 days of the year. It is fifth among the six abodes of Murugan (Arupadai Veedu). The other five are Palani Murugan Temple, Swamimalai Murugan Temple, Thiruchendur Murugan Temple, Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple. Tiruttani is 87 kilometres (54 mi) from Chennai. During the Sangam era, Tiruttani was known as Kundruthoradal. After killing the asura Tarakasura in Tiruchendur, he came here to subside his anger, so Surasamharam is not conducted here.

It is believed that the wedding between Lord Murugan and Valli took place here, in Thiruthani.

*Architecture*

The Thiruthani Murugan is built in the Dravidian style of architecture on a hill named Thanigai. The beautiful abode of Lord Muruga crowns a single rock 700 feet above sea level. It is situated amidst a range of hills which showcase a dramatic panoramic view. The procession deityโ€™s shrine is in a mandap made of 1 lakh Rudrakshas.

The temple has a five-level gopuram along with four precincts. There are several water bodies associated with the temple. The temple has two shrines, namely, Murugan in the form of Shaktidharar and the shrines of Valli and Deivayanai in two other chambers.

*History*

This temple has been mentioned in the Sangam period work Tirumurugatruppadai composed by Nakkeerar. It has been patronized by the Vijayanagara rulers and local chieftains and zamindars. The original animal mount of Murugan is believed to have been an elephant, compared to the peacock which is considered to be the most common mount. The white elephant, is considered a powerful, terror striking animal.

*Legend*

According to the regional legend of the temple, Indra, the king of the devas gave his daughter Devasena in marriage to Murugan, and along with her presented his elephant Airavata as part of his offering. Upon Airavata's departure, Indra found his wealth waning. Murugan is said to have offered to return the white elephant, however Indra bound by protocol refused to accept a gift that he had made, and insisted that the elephant face his direction, hence the image of the elephant in this temple also faces the east.

Another legend has it that Indra presented a sandal stone as a part of his daughter's gift. The sandal paste made on this stone is applied to the image of Murugan and the applied paste is said to acquire medicinal value. Murugan is also believed to have imparted knowledge of Tamil to the sage Agastya and he is heralded with the epithets Veeramurti, Jnanamurti, and Acharyamurti in this shrine.

Vasuki, The snake king, got his bodily wounds healed, which had been caused during the Samudra Manthan, the churning process in the Milky Ocean to secure the nectar of immortality called Amrita, by the devas and the asuras.

Lord Muruga is said to have shed his anger here at Thiruthani, after finishing the demon.

It is said that Lord Rama, after defeating Ravana, worshipped Lord Shiva at Rameswaram and then came to Tiruthani to attain peace.

Ujjain's Nagchandreshwar Temple: Why does it open only one day in a year? There has been a tradition of worshipping snakes in Hinduism for centuries. In the Hindu tradition, snakes are also considered as ornaments of God. There are many temples of snakes in India, one of these is the Nagchandreshwar temple in Ujjain, which is located on the third floor of the famous Mahakal temple of Ujjain.

The special thing about this is that this temple is opened for darshan only on one day of the year, Nag Panchami (Shravan Shukla Panchami). It is believed that Nagraj Takshak himself lives in the temple.

There is a wonderful 11th century idol in the Nagchandreshwar temple, in which Shiva and Parvati are seated on the seat of a snake with its hood spread. It is said that this idol was brought here from Nepal. There is no such idol anywhere in the world except Ujjain.

This is the only temple in the whole world where instead of Lord Vishnu, Lord Bholenath is seated on a serpent bed. In the ancient idol installed in the temple, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati are seated on a ten-faced serpent bed. Snakes are wrapped around the neck and arms of Lord Shiva.
