The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has explained its move in allowing Chinaโs Shi Yu Qi to play in the World Championships from Aug 21-28 in Tokyo, Japan.
China had initially pulled Shiโs name from the entry list. Under Section 3.2.21 of the Regulations for eligibility and processing of entries for World Championships, a player or pair who has declined in Phase One cannot be re-entered.
Phase One entries to the World Championships are based on the world rankings on the last Thursday of April. This year, it fell on April 28.
BWF would then inform the member associations the following day, and they would have until the second Thursday of May to confirm the entries. This year, that was on May 12.
Yesterday, BWF council member Datuk Kenny Goh, had asked the world body to explain its decision.
BWF, in clarifying the matter, released a statement last night saying: โBWF considered Shi Yu Qi as technically ineligible at the time of the first invitation phase due to his suspension, which the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) confirmed in their letter, as part of their request for special dispensation.
โCBA clarified that subsequent to the first invitation phase, the suspension of Shi was lifted.
โAs such, Shi was then considered eligible for an invitation, in substitution for the withdrawal of Chen Long.โ
BWF said that as this was a special case, a dispensation under the GCR (general competition regulations) was approved by BWF president Poul-Erik Hoyer, and deputy chair of events, Zhang Jun.
Besides Goh, Shiโs inclusion in the world meet received plenty of attention, especially from Indonesia.

Yuqiโs presence may spell trouble for Zii Jia at world meet
PETALING JAYA
Lee Zii Jia has an additional opponent to deal with in his pursuit for excellence in the World Championships.
Former All-England champion Shi Yuqi, who was banned for a year by China for misconduct last year, has been named as replacement for Chen Long, who declined participation for the world meet in Tokyo, Japan next month.
The world meet will be the world No. 17 Yuqiโs first tournament since the Thomas Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark last year and the first world meet since missing the last two editions.
He withdrew from the last two editions due to ankle injury.
Shi Yuqi will be joined by Lu Guangzu and Zhao Junpeng for the stint.
The return of Yuqi will make the battle for menโs singlesโ supremacy in the world meet more interesting as he will be more hungry to prove himself after a turbulent year.
Besides Yuqi, Zii Jiaโs other challengers in the world meet are Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen of Denmark; Indonesiaโs Anthony Ginting, Jonatan Christie; Thailandโs Kunlavut Vitidsarn; Indiaโs Lakshya Sen, K. Srikanth; and several players from Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

Birmingham Commonwealth Games: Aaron Chia is back in training -- Rexy
The pairing of Aaron and Soh Wooi Yik became the hope for the national contingent to win the men's doubles gold medal in the Games after the professional men's singles, Lee Zii Jia, chose to withdraw.
However, Aaron contracted the coronavirus last week, raising concerns that it would affect his Birmingham campaign.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Doubles Division Coaching Director, Rexy Mainaky, came forward to confirm that Aaron had started training three days ago and did not seem to be affected by the infection.
"There is no problem with Aaron's condition," said Rexy.
"He trained well these three days.
"It is true that his movements were a little hesitant but this morning, he seemed to be back to normal," he said.
