Today, we look back with gratitude and humility on six decades of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel, which began on May 12, 1965 – 20 years after the crime against humanity of the Shoah.

It is a great gift of history that such a deep friendship could develop between our two states as unites us today.
 
This includes not only close political and economic cooperation, but above all the many contacts at all levels of civil society, such as the more than 100 city partnerships – the most recent of which was signed last week between Tel Aviv and Berlin.
 
The 60th anniversary is overshadowed by the impact of the horrific terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the rapidly rising anti-Semitism worldwide – including in Germany. 

Germany stands firmly by the side of Israel and the Jewish people. Our responsibility for the security of Israel and its people, and for the Jewish people, is and remains a cornerstone of German foreign policy and part of the political DNA of the CDU in Germany.
