🛢 🇨🇳 ⛽️ China Halts Fuel Exports Until Further Notice

China has suspended fuel exports until further notice, with PetroChina cancelling October gasoline and jet fuel cargoes. This move, effective ahead of the Golden Week holiday, aims to protect domestic supply as gasoline and diesel inventories have fallen to seven-year lows. The suspension, following a period of increased exports in August after a mid-July easing, is expected to further tighten the global fuel market amid constrained domestic supply and strengthening internal demand. Cocoon AI Summary

China's refiners have halted fuel exports until further notice, multiple sources briefed on the matter told Reuters on Thursday in a development that could further tighten the global fuel market.

PetroChina, the state major, has canceled some gasoline and jet fuel cargoes that were expected to be shipped in October, according to the sources.

China suspended fuel exports in the spring and early summer as it looked to protect its domestic fuel supply amid the Strait of Hormuz crisis. As of the middle of July, Chinese authorities removed most restrictions on fuel exports, allowing refiners to boost overseas shipments and ease the fuel crunch in Asia.

China's fuel exports recovered in August as refiners exported 6.01 million tons of petroleum products, up by 12.7% from a year earlier, after Beijing removed restrictions in mid-July.

Fuel exports from China soared between July and September, but it appears new restrictions are in place in October as China did not authorize fuel exports beyond Hong Kong and Macau ahead of the week-long Golden Week public holiday starting on October 1. It is not clear if China would authorize any fuel exports after the holiday week ends on October 7.

Analysts last week said that China could lower its fuel exports again in October, potentially tightening the global fuel market further, as domestic gasoline and diesel inventories have slumped to multi-year lows.

October exports could be lower due to the seven-year-low gasoline and diesel inventories in China, GL Consulting, a consultancy owned by MySteel, said last week.

With "domestic supply already relatively constrained and internal demand strengthening, refiners are likely to prioritise the domestic market," GL Consulting said.

The tight global fuel markets will suffer another blow to supplies if the domestic market priority is a government policy in China and Beijing restricts fuel exports again.

🇺🇸 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 US Tells France and Germany to Release Diesel Stocks or Face US Export Ban, Sources Say

The Trump administration has told Germany and France to draw down emergency diesel inventories to help to ease global fuel prices or face a potential US diesel export ban, said three people close ‌to the discussions.

The warning marks an ‌escalation of pressure on Europe as US President Donald Trump considers a potential diesel export ban to bring down US fuel prices ahead of November's midterm elections.

The European Commission, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland and Britain were holding a call on Thursday to discuss the possible need to release diesel stocks, an EU official told Reuters.

"It is in Europe’s best interest to work with the United States as we pursue multiple pathways to boost the supply of refined products and lower costs for consumers," one of the sources, a US official, told Reuters.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told reporters on Wednesday that the US administration expected announcements soon from Europe about new diesel supplies.

"We've lost some diesel exports from the Middle East, although we're restoring those, and we've lost diesel exports from China," he said. "So that's a lot of interruptions."

Europe has become increasingly dependent on US fuel after banning Russian imports over Russia's invasion of Ukraine and after the US-Israeli war against Iran disrupted supplies from the Middle East.

🚛 🇺🇸 ⛽️ 16 U.S. Trucking Companies File For Bankruptcy In Less Than A Month As Diesel Prices Soar

Diesel prices, the lifeblood of the trucking industry, hit a record average of $6.53 a gallon on September 22 amid the impact of President Donald Trump’s war with Iran. Diesel has increased $2.76 over the past year, according to motor club AAA.

Two of the biggest companies listed, Xoco Transport and Globemaster, are entering Chapter 11 proceedings, meaning they will remain open for business but work with bankruptcy court and creditors to make a payment plan for their debts.

“When fuel costs go up, the trucking companies face a sudden increase in their operational cost and are forced to increase freight rates to avoid going in loss,” the group wrote.

Increasing their shipping rates isn’t a cure-all, either. Companies typically have to lay off workers and sell equipment to stay afloat, ASM Group wrote.

But diesel prices are just one of the financial pressures that trucking companies have to battle, according to a July analysis by consultancy Deloitte.

“Labor, insurance, maintenance, and regulatory compliance costs continue to escalate,” Deloitte wrote.

In general, hauling freight has busy and slow seasons. During those slower months, companies may not generate enough revenue to cover those cost increases, the report said.

Of the 16 trucking companies listed in FreightWaves’ reporting, eight companies are filing Chapter 11 and seven are liquidating all their assets and closing through Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

🇪🇹⚔️🇪🇷 Ethiopia broke off diplomatic relations with Eritrea accusing the latter of supporting the TPLF and other rebel movements which aim to topple the Ethiopian government

With the resumption of fighting between the ENDF and TPLF, the TPLF alongside a new rebel Afar group invaded Ethiopia's Afar region with borders the southeastern corner of Eritrea.

It is alleged by Ethiopia that Eritrean troops are involved in the TPLF offensive in the Afar region as a way to create a buffer zone and protect the Eritrean port of Assab which Addis Ababa laid claims on.
