Canada will fast track the approval process for a new proposed crude oil export pipeline to its west coast that could generate over C$20 billion ($14 billion) a year in GDP, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Thursday.
The pipeline, which was announced in July, is a crucial part of Carney's bid to diversify the economy away from the United States and help lessen the effect of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.
Carney said Ottawa would officially list the Pacific Link pipeline as a project of national interest, which enables it proceed through a single federal regulatory review process. He said Ottawa aimed to complete the process by September 1, 2027.
"A pipeline to the west coast is part of our mission to transform our economy, to double our non-U.S. exports over the next decade ... (and) to unlock our full potential as a global energy superpower," he told reporters in Fort McMurray, hub of Alberta's oil sands industry.
Ottawa says the 1 million barrel a day project would create 140,000 jobs and generate over C$20 billion in GDP per year and C$100 billion in government revenue by 2060.
Canada currently has just one east-west oil export pipeline in Canada, the 890,000-barrel-per-day Trans Mountain pipeline. An expansion of that pipeline was completed in 2024, but it is already running at capacity.
For years, Canada has sent more than 90% of its crude oil exports to the United States via pipeline. A new oil export pipeline could make Canada a major global energy supplier, as Asia's top importers seek oil from outside the Middle East in the wake of the Iran conflict.
Filling the pipeline, however, would require new oil sands expansions of the type no company has undertaken in more than a decade.

Ansarullah continue the assault towards the "Habashi" mountain, leading an armored advance towards "AlSaeed". [2]
In the "Jurdad" heights front, Ansarullah retake Jabal "Qurfan" and "Wadi AlAjram", then proceed to advance towards "Darahah". [3]
Heavy clashes continue in Jabal "Aghbar". Status is unclear in "Waziyah" and "Kabhub" mountains.
Notably, withdrawals near the town of "Najd AlBard" allowed Ansarullah saboteurs to successfully detonate the "Hayjat alAbd" major supply line, following a failed attempt a few days ago. [4]

What allowed our democracies to establish themselves was that we told the middle classes they would live better and better. The idea of progress is therefore attached to our democracies and to this balance.
We stopped keeping the economic promise. That began with deindustrialization. Globalization from the 1990s onward weakened that consensus through waves of relocation.
The promise that the political economy would continuously allow you to live better was no longer being fulfilled.
The great blow was the crisis of 2008–2012. And who paid the bill? The middle classes.
Even in countries that were less affected, some groups have still not fully recovered the purchasing power and living standards they had before that crisis. There was a sense of betrayal.

There is a crisis of effectiveness in our democracies. We have made our systems more sophisticated, but we have become extremely complex, less understandable and slower.
Checks and balances and independent authorities were created for very good reasons, but they have slowed the ability of our democratic system to act.
That creates impatience in societies that want problems solved very quickly.
This crisis of democratic effectiveness makes our systems less acceptable and creates a fascination with authoritarian regimes or authoritarian systems.

The first answer is to re-humanize social networks. We have to take back control.
We have to take back control of social networks and of the artificial intelligence that is arriving. This is a European battle.
What I call re-humanizing means taking back control, putting everything back at the right pace and making democracy work again.
