👮♂️ 🇲🇪 🇷🇺 Montenegro detained Rybar founder Mikhail Zvinchuk and four associates in a dawn raid on the Bay of Kotor.
Police and the national security agency (ANB) picked up the pro-Russian military blogger, his wife/creative director Valeria, and three staff at the Mövenpick Hotel in Risan this morning, seizing drones, digital equipment, and documents.
Authorities say they’d been watching the group for days.
The stated concern is that Zvinchuk’s planned documentary on Montenegro’s new visa rules for Russians would frame EU integration as damaging the economy.
Rybar (~1.5M subscribers) says the team was in the country legally and expects release.
Russia’s foreign ministry says its embassy is looking into it.
Zvinchuk — a former Russian MoD press officer — is under both UK and EU sanctions, and the US has a $10M Rewards for Justice bounty tied to alleged election interference by Rybar staff.

📢 🇪🇹 🇪🇷 Ethiopia says it must defend itself against Eritrea's 'all-out invasion'
Ethiopia said an "all-out invasion" by Eritrean forces had left it with no option but to defend itself, in a letter to the UN shared with Reuters on Friday, as blasts continued near the border between the two countries.
In response, Eritrea's information minister said his country had shown restraint since Ethiopia had declared a war of aggression against Eritrea by stating in 2023 it would acquire sovereign access to the sea.
Ethiopia lost its access to all coastline when Eritrea secured independence in 1993. Addis Ababa argues that restoring sea access is an existential issue but has said it would be restored through peace and dialogue.
Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting a rebel alliance in Ethiopia. Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos said in the letter that Eritrean forces had advanced up to 60 km (37 miles) into the country.
"The all-out invasion of parts of northern Ethiopia by Eritrea is a matter of public record,” the letter said. “It is a blatant act of aggression that engages Ethiopia’s inherent right to self-defence.”
Drone strikes, believed to have been carried out by Ethiopia’s military, targeted Eritrean forces on Wednesday and Thursday as they withdrew from positions near the northern Tigray town of Adigrat, about 30 km (19 miles) from the border with Eritrea, the US-based conflict monitor ACLED said.
Ethiopian government forces have continued to gain ground in Tigray in recent days and, in a sign of further consolidation, Ethiopian Airlines said it would resume flights to the regional capital Mekelle on October 11.

Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of an “all-out invasion” and says it has no choice but to defend itself, alleging Eritrean forces advanced up to 60 km into the Tigray region, according to Reuters. Eritrea denies the reported incursion, accusing Ethiopia of seeking a pretext for war.

• Shipping companies working together with the US will face sanctions, while those belonging to companies violating Iran’s authority will face punitive measures.
• The IRGC says from now on, actions against vessels violating regulations will not be limited to the Strait of Hormoz alone. Ships using unauthorized routes could be pursued and targeted anywhere in the the region.
This explains the attacks today and yesterday when a ship near Qatar was struck.

🇺🇸 📵 🇨🇳 The Trump administration is considering measures to restrict or effectively block U.S. use of advanced Chinese AI models, citing national security and cybersecurity concerns. The debate has intensified as Chinese open-source models like Kimi become…
Ecosia CEO Christian Kroll said Mistral’s models are “a year behind” competitors, citing poor performance, recurring server problems and concerns over its dependence on foreign investors.
Ecosia, which replaced OpenAI with Mistral in May, says switching to open-source models has cut costs by roughly half while improving quality and performance.
Kroll believes Europe can compete in AI by building on Chinese-backed open models rather than spending billions developing its own.

A US charity operating in Gaza is concerned that teachers at its schools could deviate from a curriculum it describes as promoting peace and tolerance. To address this, it plans to record classroom discussions and deploy artificial intelligence to identify language considered “hateful” or “inciting.”
The proposal was outlined last month by the founder of Gaza Children Village during a webinar, prompting ethical, security and privacy concerns among Palestinian groups, advocacy organizations and at least one of the charity’s partners.
Palestinian rights organizations have criticized the charity’s broader educational agenda, arguing that it operates without accountability to local and UN agencies that have historically overseen Gaza’s schools.
It remains unclear when the classroom surveillance system will be introduced, which specific language it will flag, or whether teachers, students and their families have been informed of the plans.
Dr. David Hasan, the charity’s founder, says his goal is to ‘de-radicalize’ Gaza.

Some caveats apply: UKMTO relies on voluntary reporting and often publishes warnings days late, so recent strikes (and reported/unreported turn-backs) are likely undercounted. A confirmed hit also doesn’t necessarily disable or sink a vessel, let alone “mission-kill” it
Oil flows are down significantly already: Rory Johnston of the excellent Commodity Context estimates 7-day average Hormuz oil flows have fallen to 12–13 MMbpd over the past two weeks, from a peak of 16.2 MMbpd on September 24.
It remains an open question how long shippers and insurers can sustain this pace of attrition. The tanker fleet is large, and mariners are willing to undertake dangers if sufficiently compensated for the risk.
Still, I estimate that somewhere between 5-15% of tanker transits in the SoH are suffering strikes (yes, the error bands are large). Furthermore, Iran appears to be widening its campaign beyond the Strait. All in all, dangerous time for shipping oil.
