To all members of the Cambridge Academy family.
We trust you have had a great break and we hope everyone is looking forward with anticipation as we start term two. We continue to work hard to make the changes required to ensure Cambridge Academy Ethiopia becomes the school of choice for parents in Addis Ababa. We continue to be grateful to all members of the CAE family for placing your trust in us.
A key aspect of successful school management is having the right leadership. I am sure you will all agree, last term Liz and Neil provided the school with superb transformational leadership, as they demanded significant improvements. Teachers, students and parents all rose to the challenge and the school is a better place to learn because of their dedication, insight and expertise. We remain convinced that this is only the beginning and we have much to do to continue this exciting journey. It is in this context that we are pleased to announce the arrival of John Shea to Addis Ababa. John is an experienced and successful school leader with significant international senior leadership experience. Most recently, John has been a school leader in the USA, prior to this he has undertaken leadership roles in Panama and New Delhi, India.
John is joining us as Interim Head of School, he will be working closely with Liz, Neil and the rest of the school leadership to continue the transformation of Cambridge Academy. Initially John will serve the school for two terms until the end of this current school year, but may be with us for longer. We are confident that our new senior leadership team, John, Liz and Neil, under the continued guidance of Mark Whitfield, will drive the school forwards and we are grateful for the support you will give as we all have a shared desire to see Cambridge Academy thrive.
We spoke to John prior to him catching his flight to Addis Ababa, he said “I am tremendously excited -- and honored -- to be joining the Cambridge Academy Ethiopia team. I am looking forward to getting to know the faculty, staff, students, and parents in the days ahead. I am looking forward to contributing to very best of my abilities and helping to lead CAE into the future - to serve our students with everything we have and to build one of the best education programs in all of Addis Ababa.”
Look out for John in the coming days, he will be keen to meet with you and share his vision for the school.

INFORMAL COFFEE WITH INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Tuesday, Feb 14, 2023, at 8:30 am – on campus.
Our new interim head of school, John Shea, will be hosting an informal coffee on campus for interested Cambridge Academy parents on Tuesday, February 14 at 8:30 am – for an hour or so. This will be an opportunity to get to know one another – and a particularly good chance for PTA representatives and other parents actively involved in the school to meet with John. An RSVP to John (john.shea@cambridgeethiopia.org) before Tuesday would be helpful – so we can make plans for precisely where to meet. We anticipate that this will be a relatively small group.
In March, Mr. Shea (and our school leadership team) will host a forum intended for all interested Cambridge Academy parents. This will include a presentation of where we are now as school, our plans for the remainder of the year, and our plans for the 2023-24 school year and beyond. We’re also hopeful we’ll have a longer-term leadership team (head of school, head of primary, and head of secondary) secured by this time – and, if so, we will tell you all about them. Date and time will be announced well in advance of the forum/meeting.

Dear Parents,
As many of you know, we have been seeking long-term stability in our senior leadership team. I am very pleased to announce that we have secured two high-quality senior leaders who will take up their roles in the very near future.
Dr. Stephen Walker
Role: Head of School
Arrival: Mid-April
Dr. Stephen Walker visited Addis Ababa recently and he impressed all those that he met. Stephen is an experienced school leader and he brings to the school a wealth of experience managing British curriculum schools in the UK and East Africa. Stephen has signed a long term contract with Cambridge Academy Ethiopia and will join us as Head of School in mid-April.
Dr Stephen Walker (aka ‘Daktari’) is passionate about educational change and development thereby preparing young people for the diverse and ever changing demands of life in the 21st century. He believes that this can only truly be realised through the full engagement of the whole ‘learning community’ - learners, parents, teachers and administrators. Consequently he is looking forward to embracing and working with the entire learning community of Cambridge Academy Ethiopia and journeying together to new levels of achievement.
He has served as a commissioned Officer in the Royal Navy, worked as a university academic and has over 20 years experience as an educator at both secondary and tertiary levels of education in the UK and Africa.
Daktari holds a Doctorate in Evolutionary Biology from The Queen's University of Belfast, UK; an MSc (Distinction) in Biological Sciences from University of Ulster, UK; an MEd in Leadership & Management from Flinders
University, South Australia and a BSc (Honours) in Biology from University of Stirling, UK.
He is a father to 3 grown up children and with his wife Maria, is looking forward to embracing life in Ethiopia and at Cambridge Academy.
We are confident that, in Stephen, we have found a leader who has the experience, intellect and understanding to lead the school to become the most important and best school in Addis Ababa. I know that all members of the community will give Stephen and Maria the warmest welcome.
Eva Kioko
Role: Head of Primary and Early Years
Arrival: To be confirmed
Eva visited us recently and she fell in love with the school and the vision we have to be the best school in Addis Ababa. Eva is a school leader with a passion for educational leadership and professional development with a history of success in developing strategies to achieve school and student outcomes. Eva has accomplished these goals by aligning instructional vision and working in conjunction with senior leadership teams, academic and administrative staff, parents, and students to establish and maintain educational benchmarks that meet and exceed expected standards through collaboration and mutually shared values of empathy, respect, and integrity.
I met Eva earlier this week and she wanted to convey her excitement at being appointed to the Cambridge Academy community. Eva said, “I am so looking forward to joining the CAE team. I had a fantastic visit early in February and met groups of people who warmly welcomed me and had honest conversations with me, this was humbling. Most encouraging was that I met lots of people (children and parents alike) who are proud, committed and filled with optimism for CAE. I want to be part of this team that is striving for growth and success. I look forward to meeting all of you, getting to know you, and learning from you so that I can serve you with all that I know and with all that I have.”
Like Stephen, Eva has signed a long term contract with the school, we look forward to supporting her as she delivers her vision for our primary and early years students. Thank you to all members of the community who met Eva and gave her such a warm welcome, you will have the opportunity to meet her again in the very near future.
