The two started at ~60% together when the euro launched, but diverged sharply after 2010.

Germany’s constitutional debt brake enforced balanced budgets and primary surpluses, pulling its ratio down from 81% to 59% by 2019.

France hasn’t run a surplus since 1974.

The 2025 deficit was ~5.1%; debt is projected at ~122% by 2027 without major cuts.

PM Lecornu has proposed €54 billion in savings but a fragmented parliament makes passage uncertain.

Germany, meanwhile, is loosening its debt brake slightly for defense, from a position of strength France no longer has.

The “Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act” will be forced to the House floor via discharge petition, Fitzpatrick says, and “will pass overwhelmingly.”

The bill directly targets Trump’s 9 October deal with Putin for 300K+ tons of Russian diesel.

Trump signed the Graham Act just three weeks ago authorizing 500% tariffs on Russian goods, and is now easing sanctions on Russian diesel ahead of the November midterms with prices at ~$6.28/gal.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said the October 10 attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed 12 people and injured 309 others, some critically.

The dead included four Saudis, two Bangladeshis, and nationals of the U.S., Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

Iran has preserved much of its missile and drone production capacity despite eight months of U.S. and Israeli strikes, allowing it to replenish its arsenals, Western officials told Bloomberg.

Officials said Iran still holds substantial stocks of ballistic and anti-ship missiles, while Russia is also supplying missiles.

The White House rejected the assessment, insisting Iran’s military production capabilities had been destroyed.
