The Dahiya Doctrine is Israel’s military strategy of using overwhelming force — including attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Named after the Dahiya suburb in Beirut bombed in the 2006 Lebanon War, the doctrine aims to:
• Inflict massive destruction to deter future attacks.
• Pressure civilians to turn against their forces.
• Shift blame onto non-state actors who embed in civilian areas.

Former IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot helped define the approach: if a rocket is fired from a village, the whole village becomes a target.

The doctrine violates international law, including:
• Distinction: Between civilians and combatants.
• Proportionality: Bans excessive force.
• Collective Punishment: Forbidden under the Geneva Convention.

Some say if we don’t negotiate, they might attack.
