Glassnode report discusses whale behavior towards BTC and ETH
Cryptopolitan (RSS)
In recent developments, a noticeable contrast has emerged in the behavior of major holders of the two leading cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Ethereum. On-chain analysis firm Glassnode has shed light on this divergence, revealing that Ethereum whales, characterized as those holding 1,000 or more ETH (equivalent to roughly $1.5 million), have been decreasing their holdings since 2020, resulting in the sale of approximately $20 million worth of ETH. In stark contrast, Bitcoin whales, individuals possessing 1,000 or more BTC (roughly $26.9 million), have largely maintained their positions during the same period.
Glassnode report shows whale’s contrasting activities
These positions come with occasional fluctuations, likely influenced by events such as the FTX exchange collapse or profit-taking following the successful bull run in 2021. This intriguing disparity in the actions of cryptocurrency whales has ignited a flurry of theories and discussions across social media platforms. Notably, individuals associated with the Bitcoin community have seized the opportunity to comment on their Ethereum counterparts. Steven Lubka, the head of private client services at Swan, a Bitcoin financial services provider, revealed that his company has witnessed a significant number of high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) expressing interest in converting their Ethereum holdings into Bitcoin.
He pointed to concerns related to regulations as a pivotal factor driving this trend. Lubka’s perspective was echoed by Jesse Shrader, CEO and co-founder of Amboss, a data analytics firm specializing in the Lightning Network. Shrader emphasized the fundamental role of Bitcoin as “better money,” while characterizing Ethereum as a platform marked by complexity, with risks associated with smart contracts and critical hard fork protocol changes potentially diluting its primary purpose. However, experts have raised concerns about the interpretation of Glassnode’s data and the conclusions drawn from it.
Implications of the activities on digital assets
Kunal Goel, a senior research analyst at Messari, questioned whether the chart accurately accounts for staking activities in the Ethereum network. He pointed out that transfers to a staking contract may appear as selling on the blockchain but do not constitute actual sales. Presently, Ethereum’s staking mechanism requires users to lock or pledge 32 ETH in a smart contract to aid the blockchain in validating transactions. This requirement is believed to be a driving factor behind the perceived reduction in holdings by large Ethereum holders. Goel also emphasized that while the substantial difference in dollar amounts between major holders is noteworthy, it is crucial to ensure that the data is interpreted correctly.
André Dragosch, the head of research at Deutsche Digital Assets (DDA), a crypto asset management firm, echoed Goel’s sentiments. He referred to the situation as “a non-issue,” highlighting that the percentage of ETH supply locked in smart contracts has been steadily increasing. On Twitter, Dragosch pointed out that Glassnode’s metrics do not consider Ether held in smart contracts when evaluating the holdings of Ethereum whales. He added that the percentage of ETH supply held by the top 1% of addresses has not decreased at all. In essence, while the initial data may appear to suggest one narrative, it reveals a different story upon closer examination.

🚨 MicroStrategy signals return to Bitcoin buying
Michael Saylor has signaled that MicroStrategy is ready to resume its Bitcoin accumulation strategy after a two-month pause. In a post on X, Saylor stated "We're Back," which historically precedes official announcements of massive treasury purchases.
The company recently focused on strengthening its balance sheet, building a $5.1 billion USD reserve and a $1.59 billion cash pool. This "strategic breather" occurred while their industry-leading holdings were briefly sitting in a paper loss.
With BTC recently crossing the $80,000 threshold, the firm's massive treasury of 840,447 Bitcoin is back in profit. Their average entry price sits at approximately $75,385 per coin.
This move marks a return to the offensive for the world's largest corporate crypto holder, potentially deploying billions in "dry powder" back into the market.

🚨 Liquid Network Exploit: 4,000 BTC Stolen Without Private Key Breach
The Liquid network suffered a major security incident on Sept. 6, resulting in the loss of nearly 4,000 BTC. In a rare type of attack, the network's private keys were not compromised. Instead, attackers exploited a software flaw that tricked the system into approving unauthorized withdrawals.
Attackers generated L-BTC (Liquid Bitcoin) without providing the required BTC backing. They then exchanged these unbacked tokens for real Bitcoin from the shared reserve. The automated withdrawal software trusted the incorrect account balances and authorized the transfer using valid keys.
This event highlights that private key security is not a total guarantee of safety. If smart contracts or underlying network software contain vulnerabilities, assets can be drained even when keys remain secure.

Bitcoin price reacted by sliding to around $81,783, down 1% in 24 hours. Other assets also struggled; Ether ETFs saw $111 million leave, while Solana and Hyperliquid (HYPE) ETFs lost $9 million and $8 million respectively. XRP bucked the trend, gaining $3.6 million.

💰 Bitcoin ETFs Snap 2-Week Outflow Streak with $301M Inflow
US spot Bitcoin ETFs ended last week with $301 million in net inflows, successfully breaking a two-week streak of heavy withdrawals. The recovery follows significant losses of $228 million and $680 million in the preceding two weeks.
The week saw a massive $1.08 billion inflow between Monday and Wednesday as BTC surged to a weekly high of $84,777. However, momentum cooled by Thursday and Friday, with investors pulling out $774 million as the price retreated toward the $80,000 mark.
Research from DWF Labs indicates that ETF investors are not typically "dip buyers." Data shows net outflows occurred during seven out of eight Bitcoin sell-offs of at least 15% since the ETFs launched in January 2024.

💰 US Bitcoin ETFs Return to Inflows After $774M Exit
US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $110 million in net inflows on Monday, bouncing back after $774 million was withdrawn over the previous two trading sessions. Despite this recovery, the month of October remains in the red with approximately $202 million in total net outflows.
The rebound occurred as Bitcoin traded near $79,595, marking a 2.6% decline over the past seven days. Market sentiment has shifted slightly downward, with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index falling to 48, keeping the market in Neutral territory.
Data from CryptoQuant shows a divergence between retail and institutional behavior. Retail deposits to Binance nearly doubled to $10.8 billion over 30 days, while whale deposits fell to $3.8 billion. This suggests smaller investors are using price rebounds to exit positions while large holders reduce activity.
