Ende Gelände is heading to the Ruhr Area in Western Germany. From May 28th to 30th, 2026, we will stop the construction of new gas-fired power plants. In the Ruhr Area the big energy companies, follow the federal government's orders and want to build as many as six new gas-fired power plants, boasting a capacity of up to 5 GW.
The gas-fired power plants will be build at the locations of old, shut-down coal-fired power plants. Instead of fully embracing 100% renewable energy, the government and the big companies want to bind the Ruhr Area to fossil fuels.
One example is the Gersteinwerk power plant located in Werne. The last bit of coal was burned there in 2019. Gas turbines have been running at the site since the 1970s. Now, RWE, which we know well from the Rhineland lignite mining area, is planning to build a massive gas-fired power plant. But, of course, this will only happen if there are enough government subsidies. The Bundestag will decide on this in the upcoming months.
The sites of old coal-fired power plants are popular spots since they have the right grid connections.
The case of the former power plant in Ibbenbüren shows that there are other ways to use these assets. A big battery storage facility will be built where the coal-fired power plant used to be until 2021. This will help the green energy transition.

Jetzt will RWE (uns gut bekannt aus dem Rheinischen Braunkohlerevier) ein riesiges Gaskraftwerk bauen. Aber natürlich nur, wenn es genug Subventionen vom Staat gibt. Die Entscheidung darüber trifft der Bundestag in den nächste Monaten.
Die alten Kohlekraftwerke sind beliebte Standorte, da sie über die nötigen Netzanschlüsse verfügen.
Das man die auch anderes nutzen kann, zeigt das Beispiel Ibbenbüren. Am Standort des 2021 stillgelegten Kohlekraftwerks soll nun ein großer Batteriespeicher gebaut werden um die Energiewende zu unterstützen.

Protest at the Lippendorf Coal-Fired Power Plant:
STOP EPH! No gas power station in Lippendorf!
As part of the international days of action against EPH, activists in Lippendorf, Saxony, hung a banner in front of the Lippendorf coal-fired power plant. This is because EPH, together with its subsidiary LEAG, plans to build a gas-fired power plant here in order to continue its destructive fossil business after coal mining comes to an end!
This false solution is widespread. Fossil fuel companies are using the phase-out of coal—which is already happening far too late—to transition to gas and secure their dirty profits for decades to come!
This strategy is also quite popular among EPH’s subsidiaries—LEAG and MIBRAG. While LEAG and MIBRAG continue to squeeze the last profits out of coal and simultaneously shift the costs and consequences of environmental restoration onto the public, the coal-fired power plants in Lippendorf, Schkopau, and Schwarze Pumpe are set to be replaced by gas-fired power plants, allowing the destruction caused by fossil fuels to continue.
The shift from coal to gas infrastructure isn’t limited to the "Mitteldeutsches Revier" and "Lausitz". In the Ruhr region, too, the climate killer gas is now set to replace the climate killer coal. In the Ruhr region a massive expansion of fossil gas is being pushed forward.
We will not accept this!

Im Rahmen der internationalen Aktionstage gegen die EPH haben Aktivist*innen im sächsischen Lippendorf ein Banner vor dem Kohlekraftwerk Lippendorf angebracht. Denn hier möchte die EPH mit ihrer Tochterfirma LEAG ein Gaskraftwerk bauen, um nach der Kohleförderung ihr zerstörerisches, fossiles Geschäft weiterzuführen!
Diese Scheinlösung ist weit verbreitet. Fossile Konzerne nutzen den - bereits viel zu spät stattfindenden - Kohleausstieg, um ihn zum Gaseinstieg zu machen und ihre dreckigen Gewinne auf weitere Jahrzehnte abzusichern!
Diese Strategie ist auch bei den Tochterfirmen der EPH - der LEAG und der MIBRAG - durchaus beliebt. ✊ Get rid of EPH! - Building a future of solidarity!
📈 The Czech energy giant EPH continues to drive the destruction of the environment and the climate through the coal mining operations of its subsidiaries LEAG and Mibrag.
⚒️ But this does not always go unchallenged. In 2021, for example, the village of Pödelwitz, south of Leipzig, which was threatened by lignite mining, was successfully saved.
🏚️ Although Mibrag has already displaced 80% of the residents and is systematically allowing the vacant houses to fall into disrepair, new life is emerging in the village.
For in this nearly empty village, a place of the future is taking shape.
🌱 Through community supported agriculture and numerous collective initiatives, a way of life focused on the common good and ecological sustainability is being brought to life here.

✊ Get rid of EPH! - Building a future of solidarity!
📈 The Czech energy giant EPH continues to drive the destruction of the environment and the climate through the coal mining operations of its subsidiaries LEAG and Mibrag.
⚒️ But this does not always go unchallenged. In 2021, for example, the village of Pödelwitz, south of Leipzig, which was threatened by lignite mining, was successfully saved.
🏚️ Although Mibrag has already displaced 80% of the residents and is systematically allowing the vacant houses to fall into disrepair, new life is emerging in the village.
For in this nearly empty village, a place of the future is taking shape.
🌱 Through community supported agriculture and numerous collective initiatives, a way of life focused on the common good and ecological sustainability is being brought to life here.

Online mobilisation talk in English: ENDE GELÄNDE MASS ACTION 28.5.-30.5.
On 6.5. at 7 PM (CEST) we give an online presentation about Ende Gelände’s action in the Ruhr Area 28.5.-30.5.2026.
The German government is planning to turn the coal-phase out into a gas lock-in, by building up to 20 new fossil gas power plants. We say: No freaking way!
We want to stand up against fossil fuels and imperial arms build-up.
In this presentation we will give you an overview about the coming action at the end of May.
In this presentation, we will briefly explain why we chose this area for the protest, and provide some insights into what Ende Gelände actions are like and what our action camp is like and how it all works. There will be a possibility to ask questions too
