Monica and Todd discuss how the internet is changing the way people read.

#Podcast_Transcript

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈTodd: So Monica, this week we’re going to talk about technology and how maybe technology changes patterns of how we read and how we write, so let’s talk about reading. Do you think you read fewer books now because of the Internet?

πŸ‡³πŸ‡ΏMonica: I don’t think I read fewer books now because of the Internet.

Todd: So you still read quite a bit?

Monica: Yeah, recently I’ve been reading quite a bit, but I think it’s more to do with how much spare time I have.

Todd: So you don’t think that the internet eats into reading time at all? At least for you?

Monica: I would have to say no because I use the internet for slightly different reasons. I use the internet to check my e-mail and communicate with my friends, but reading a book is something completely different that I do for relaxation. So yeah, I don’t think it has impacted the amount that I read.

Todd: Yeah, you see, for me I think it’s the exact opposite, it’s pretty bad. I pretty much read everything online, magazines or newspapers, and occasionally I’ll still buy a newspaper but I’ve completely stopped reading books. I just do not read books anymore and I think I’m not alone...I’ve read online, ironically, of other people who say that they’ve stopped reading books because you’re so used to reading online now that the actual process of sitting down and reading a book just isn’t as enjoyable as it used to be.

Monica: Well, having said that it doesn’t affect how much I read, I have to say that I have stopped reading newspapers in hard copy form. I tend to check the news items on the websites so, yeah, in that regard, I do read less than I used to.

Todd: So you buy newspapers quite rarely?

Monica: Yeah, exactly. I’m also concerned about the environment so I sort of feel that if I can get the news from the Internet then it’s saving all the trees being cut down and printed into a newspaper form.

Todd: Yeah, that’s a good way to look at it.

β–ͺ️Eat into

The internet eats into reading time.

Here the phrase eats intoβ€š refers to taking time away from something. So if you do one thing, and because of it you do something less, then it eats into the things you do less. Notice the following:

▫️I try not to watch TV too much because it eats into my study time.

▫️I find social web sites eat into quality time I could spend with my family.

β–ͺ️The exact opposite

For me it's the exact opposite, I prefer the internet to books.

When something is the exact opposite of something that means it is completely different and the counter part to something. For example, people who love getting up early are the exact opposite of people who love staying up late. Notice the following:

▫️Playing defense in basketball is the exact opposite of playing offense.

▫️Teaching is the exact opposite of studying.

β–ͺ️I am not alone

I do not read books anymore and I think I’'m not alone.

Here the phrase "I am not alone" means that there are other people who think like the speaker does, or has the same feelings about something. Here are a few examples:

▫️I hate our new boss and I am not alone on that feeling.

▫️Many people agree with you about the new proposal. You are not alone.

β–ͺ️Having said that

The internet has not affected my reading habits. Having said that, I no longer buy newspapers.

The phrase "having said that" let's the listener know that speaker does not agree totally with what he or she said earlier. You use the phrase β€˜"having said that"’ to show that what you will say next does not totally agree with what you said earlier.

▫️I do not like to play tennis. Having said that, I do think it is an exciting game.

▫️I do not think he is a good teacher. Having said that, I do think he knows his subject well.

β–ͺ️That's a good way to look at it

We use the phrase "that's a good way to look at it" when we feel the speaker has a good attitude about a bad situation. Here are some examples:

▫️Conversation 1:
A: I hate the traffic in the morning, but it allows me some quite time to be alone.
B: That's a good way to look at it.

▫️Conversation 2:
A: My English teachers speaks really fast, but it’s a good chance to improve my listening.
B: That's a good way to look at it.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈTodd: OK, so you didn't have to do the test but you had to do letters or recommendation?

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈNydja: I did have to do three letters of recommendation and ...

Todd: Can I ask? Who did you ask? Professors?

Nydja: I did ask a few professors, an employer, and a long time family friend.

Todd: So you had a quite diverse mix?

Nydja: Yes.

Todd: One professor, one friend, family friend, and one employer.

Nydja: Yes.

Todd: Now, were you worried about what they were going to say?

Nydja: Well, when you ask for a reference you definitely want to ask from somebody you trust to write a good one for you. I've know people who have just randomly asked people, and not gotten the results that they had wanted. But even still, you kind of wonder like, what good do they have to say about me. What are they going to pick and choose because sometimes you want them to mention certain things, and it's best to actually ask them to.

Todd: So you kind of feed them what to say?

Nydja: Yes. A little bit.

Todd: So you took the test. You got the letters of recommendation. Is there any other part that you have
to do to get in to grad school? Like show your transcripts? Summit transcripts?

Nydja: Yes, you have to pay your undergrad, wherever you got your degree for your undergrad, you have to pay them all this money for them to send an official transcript to your new school that you want to go to.

Todd: Now, do they actually send you the transcript as well, or do they just send it straight to the school?

Nydja: No, they send it straight to the school because the schools require an official transcript, so they don't trust you to send it in cause they figure you might mess with your grades.

Todd: You might fidget or something.

Nydja: Yeah.

Todd: So is that it then? The transcripts?

Nydja: Transcripts, letters of recommendation, essays, letter of intent.

Todd: Letter of intent. Is there a difference between the essay and the letter of intent?

Nydja: An essay can sometimes just be a writing sample, whereas a letter of intent ... they want to know like your life goals, and your purpose of being on this earth. I don't like writing those personally, but ...

Todd: Why not?

Nydja: Cause it just changes, and I think it's just contrived really. I don't see ... I can sum it up in a couple of sentences, but they want, you know, a three page paper on your life goals and I just don't like to have to write something.

Todd: Right, right, especially most people are quite young, so like they really know right?

Nydja: Yeah, yeah.

β–ͺ️Letter of recommendation

I needed three letters of recommendation.

A letter of recommendation is a letter written for someone as a reference for a job or application process. In the letter of recommendation, the writer lists good points about the person being recommended. A letter of recommendation often is written by someone of authority or higher status, such as a professor, teacher, or boss. Notice the following:

▫️I asked my professor to write me a letter of recommendation for grad school.

▫️My old boss wrote me a great letter of recommendation for my new job.

β–ͺ️A diverse mix

There's quite a diverse mix.

A mix of something is a collection of different things or substances. Diverse means varied or different. Actually, a mix is already diverse but we say diverse mix for emphasis. You could say "quite a mix" and mean the same thing. Notice the following:

▫️There is quite a diverse mix of students in class.

▫️The video store has a diverse mix of movies.

β–ͺ️Feed

You feed them what to say.

Normally, feed means to give someone or something food, such as when you feed a baby or feed a dog. But you can feed other things such as items or information that will be used later. Notice the following:

▫️I fed the machines all my quarters but it still did not give me my drink.

▫️The teacher fed the students the answers for the test.

β–ͺ️Mess with

You might mess with your grades.

When you mess with something, you interfere with it, or change it from it s normal condition. Notice the following:

▫️Don't mess that. You will break it.

▫️Someone has been messing with my computer. Was it you?

β–ͺ️Sum up

I can sum it up in a few sentences.

When you sum something up, you give a summary of what happened or will happen. A sum is also the total of all the parts.

▫️Can you sum up the lecture for me. I missed class.

▫️To sum up most marriages: boy meets girl, boy falls in love, boy gets married.
