When they said you could see the Russian sub off the coast of Florida this was my reply—
Funny thing. They interviewed people about any sign of Russian ships or subs around Cuba and the natives are denying seeing anything. Secondly— and I say this having served two years off and on with the submarine service at Groton, CN— if these subs were really on a war footing you would NEVER SEE THEM! Secondly, these huge fleet ballistic subs can’t get close enough for anyone from shore to see them. They do not do well on the surface and the “littoral” area not deep enough for close running. The Russians used to use Kilo class small quiet subs for littoral warfare and it drove our navy crazy during the days of CCCP submarine detente.
