Every smallpox epidemic is preceded by war and famine. You don’t need to invoke a virus. Without calories and potassium as a result of war which kills farmers and hunters, food supply contracts. Your liver shuts down phase two detoxification to conserve other critical functions in the body. As a last ditch effort the body pushes toxins out through the skin — we see it as a rash.
