During the first Gulf War as a USN reservist Ortho Surgeon I got orders to the Comfort. Reported with sea bags etc. to deploy and at last minute was stopped because of low casualties needing Ortho. But I had many nights to consider going aboard this ship with targets painted all over the hull, which was positioned outside the “Aegis Bubble” of airspace protection and within shoulder fired missile range from shore off the Straits of Hormuz. Seemed like not a good plan to place all your wounded in such a floating high emotional impact target. I forgot to mention Oxygen tanks surrounded the landing pad, and patients could not be brought aboard through the hull entry during any rough sea state and there was no crew to deal with a helo which fouled the deck. It seemed like a bad plan I’m not sorry to have missed.
