In the French language, there exists a word, "bérézina," derived from the name of a river located in present-day Belarus. In 1812, Napoleon's Grande Armée experienced a chaotic retreat from Russia following the aborted occupation of Moscow.
When they attempted to cross the Berezina River at Borisov, they encountered the Imperial Russian Army under Field Marshal Wittgenstein and Admiral Chichagov. The Battle of Berezina unfolded from November 26th to 29th, 1812. Although Napoleon managed to cross the river to continue his shameful retreat, the losses incurred were so severe that "bérézina" became synonymous with "complete disaster” in the French language.
On Monday, February 26, 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron announced new measures to support Ukraine, saying that not even the sending of Western ground troops was ruled out to achieve Europe's goal of defeating Moscow.
