The Swaran Singh Committee was constituted in 1976 during the Emergency under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Based on its recommendations, Fundamental Duties were added to the Constitution through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976.
Initially, 10 Fundamental Duties were added under Article 51A.
Later, the 86th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2002 added the 11th Fundamental Duty (providing opportunities for education to children aged 6–14 years)
