Hong Kong: the right to protest and the interpretation of law
#Activities #Forum #Online

15 prominent pro-democracy leaders and lawmakers were arrested in April and charged for participating in unlawful assemblies last year. Yet most of them are advocates of peaceful assembly and only showed up in rallies with the police’s approval. Protests are defined as unlawful when the letter of no objection from the police is not present, and also when the corresponding marching route, assembly area or demonstration duration do not coincide with those in the application. In Hong Kong, these regulations become a loophole which the power exploits to put juridical pressure on dissents and dissidents. In this session we will talk about the ambiguity of demonstration regulations and its impact on freedom of speech and self censorship.

Hongkong: das Misstrauen gegenüber dem Verwaltungssystem
https://youtu.be/F2SJWgoqnbg

Hong Kong was first struck by coronavirus in January, but there has been no dramatic increase in confirmed cases; the reason for this is the citizens’ mistrust of the administrative system. Hong Kongers started wearing masks long before the government took official measures and regulations. The deep-seated distrust towards the system on the one hand and civil society awareness and initiatives by citizens on the other form the status quo. The legislative council election scheduled for September sparked discussion about whether to go vote or boycott the elections: whether to try to get more than half the seats or to give up the entire election to show that this government is not recognized by people at all. What role does a person play in an election? What is the role of an individual in an election? How important is it for an individual to vote? How should we react when we have little trust in the voting system?
