We read aloud the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to remind not only China of the obligations of the state to ensure fair treatment, but also to remind us of our cause and our fight for universal rights for all.

GSWHK Christmas Message

As we draw nearer and nearer to the end of 2020, we are once again reminded how much time has elapsed since the first shots rang out on Tim Wah Avenue on June 12th, 2019, marking the start of a massive struggle led by Hongkongers that is unprecedented in scale in the history of Hong Kong. Since then, Hongkongers from all walks of life have been affected. Doctors, teachers, businessmen, journalists, politicians, and especially students threw themselves wholeheartedly into the movement and gave everything they had to support a larger cause, a wider dream that stretches as far as many can see.

But this outpouring show of support was not met with initial success. The government denied the demands of its citizens and turned to using more violence by the police to suppress the basic freedoms and rights enjoyed by Hongkongers. Over the course of last year, blood was spilled over the streets of Hong Kong as protesters fought for what they believed in, giving their freedom and lives in the process. As one united collective, the strong spirit of the Hongkonger has been proven time and time again through countless tales of bravery and selflessness, like the story of one young man holding off numerous police officers so that his companions can escape, or the one diving into a crowd of policemen to rescue his arrested comrade. Their sacrifice allowed many of us to continue the fight and reminded us of our duty to give what we have, no matter the price.

With the passing of the National Security Law and the heightened police presence in Hong Kong this year, many have fled the city in search of better prospects elsewhere, including some activists and politicians. The abduction of the 12 Hongkongers in the South China Sea by mainland police in late August proves that “One Country, Two Systems” is no more, and Hong Kong is no longer the same city that we used to love and cherish. Those still in Hong Kong are forced to reduce their presence for fear of repression, while many of us are scattered in various countries in the west, seeking sanctuary and protection in a place we now have to call home.

But though we are apart, we are connected by one identity - the identity of a Hongkonger. And this identity is not defined by how we look, what language we speak, or where we are born. It is defined by how much we are willing to give this city, how much we are willing to contribute to this nation of Hongkongers. We must therefore act as one and stay united, because only by staying united we can live out this predicament and tell our version, the right version, of what happened to our people and our land.

In the midst of many challenges around the world, we would like to reach out to each and every one of you reading this and reassure you that it is normal to feel lost and disoriented, especially at a place far from home. The task set upon us will not be easy. There will be dark days ahead. But if we commit resolutely to our cause and believe in ourselves no matter the hardship, we will prevail.

Merry Christmas. 煲底見。

[Breaking! Hong Kong Police charged 47 democratic activists with conspiracy to subvert state powers under the National Security Law.]
[Berlin: Flashmob Protest in support of the 47 arrested Hong Kong activists]

This event is to show support for 47 Hong Kong activists and politicians indicted for "conspiracy to commit subversion" under the new "National Security Law(NSL)" imposed forcefully by CCP last year. This mass detention is the largest escalation in the application of NSL to date. It marks the first time that every prominent HK pro-democracy activist is either in jail, in exile, or on trial awaiting sentencing.

We cannot stand silent amidst CCP's brutal intrusion into Hong Kong's autonomy. We must call for the immediate release of all arrested under NSL. Come and show our support for the 47 and all Hong Kongers facing political persecution.

Remember to dress in black, wear masks and keep your distance. We look forward to seeing you.

"Global Joint Statement on the Indictment of 47 Hong Kong Political Activists"

On the 28th February, 2021, 47 Hong Kong democrats and activists were charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under the National Security Law (NSL), which Beijing illegally implemented in Hong Kong without due process. Despite being scheduled to report to the Hong Kong Police on a later date (8th April), the 47 democrats and activists were served a short notice 2 days ago to report today (28th February) instead, and were immediately detained until being brought before the court to face their charges tomorrow.

All 47 detainees are pro-democracy activists involved in the unofficial primaries prior to last year’s legislative council election. They include the organizers of the primaries such as Benny Tai (戴耀廷), Au Nok-Hin (區諾軒), and Andrew Chiu (趙家賢); as well as candidates on the ballots such as Joshua Wong (黃之鋒), who is already serving a sentence in prison, and Ted Hui (許智峯) and Sunny Cheung (張崑陽), who have been forced into exile. The primaries aimed to foster better coordination of candidacies between electoral districts, which would be unremarkable and legal in most countries, but in the eyes of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) it was already an attempt at subversion and overthrowing its one-party rule. The NSL is now being used as a weapon to suppress, persecute, and eradicate any pro-democracy endeavors in Hong Kong.

We unequivocally condemn the aforementioned mass arrest, which runs against the universal values of freedom and democracy. This is a clear human rights violation and in breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. We call upon all governments and civil organizations of the world that uphold our universal values of human rights, freedom, and democracy to stand with Hong Kong at this time, to condemn the mass arrest, and to confront the CCP with concrete actions. All governments must actively resist this erosion of freedom and democracy by the CCP, lest what happens to Hong Kong today slowly but surely encroach upon them.

[G7 Statement on Hong Kong Electoral Changes]

“We, the G7 Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America and the High Representative of the European Union, are united in expressing our grave concerns at the Chinese authorities’ decision fundamentally to erode democratic elements of the electoral system in Hong Kong. Such a decision strongly indicates that the authorities in mainland China are determined to eliminate dissenting voices and opinions in Hong Kong.

The package of changes approved by the National People’s Congress, combined with mass arrests of pro-democracy activists and politicians, undermines Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. The package will also stifle political pluralism, contrary to the aim of moving towards universal suffrage as set out in the Basic Law. Furthermore, the changes will reduce freedom of speech, which is a right guaranteed in the Sino-British Joint Declaration...”

The first time since #Tiananmen Massacre in 1989, #EU is set to sanction human rights abusers in #China! Senior #EU officials will start the sanctions which include travel ban and freezing of assets of officials responsible for the human rights atrocities against Uyghurs in #Xinjiang or #East Turkestan. These sanctions will need formal sign-off, we're banking on it to happen. However, we must also take notice that the Netherlands remains the only European country so far with a parliament that voted to formally recognize #CCP's action as genocide. Do keep up, Europe! At the same time, we urge #Canada, whose parliament has declared CCP's action as genocide to sanction #Chinese officials responsible for the torture, rape and murder of thousands of ethnic minorities!

“In 2020 China abused human rights in Xinjiang, waged cyber-warfare, threatened its neighbours and intensified the cult of personality surrounding President Xi Jinping. Another purge is under way. Yet when they talk to shareholders about China, global firms gloss over this brutal reality: “Very happy,” says Siemens; “Phenomenal,” reckons Apple; and “Remarkable,” says Starbucks. Mainland China attracted $163bn of fresh multinational investment last year, more than any other country. It is opening the mainland capital markets to foreigners, who have invested $900bn, in a landmark shift for global finance...

China’s rulers believe they have found a way to marry autocracy with technocracy, opacity with openness, and brutality with commercial predictability. After the suppression of Hong Kong, free societies should be more aware than ever of the challenge that presents. They now need to muster a response—and to prepare their defences for the long struggle ahead.”
“China blacklisted five members of the European Parliament and its sub-committee on human rights on Monday in response to Brussels’ sanctions against Chinese officials accusing them of human rights abuses in Xinjiang.

The parliament, whose approval the China comprehensive agreement on investment (CAI) requires, cancelled a Tuesday meeting to discuss the deal in protest.”
