In 1968, Rud Thygesen and Johnny Sørensen took part in the “Furniture for Your Room” competition, the last in a series of design contests held by Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild and were awarded the first prize. However, it was only the next year that the “Golden Boys” of Danish design rose to prominence. The duo presented the award-winning set of furniture to King Frederik IX as a 70th birthday gift. The King accepted the gift with a royal handshake and the newspapers and magazines spread the news and the photograph all over the country. Interestingly, mass production of this series did not commence until after the King had died and special permission had been granted by the Royal Court.
Thanks to a combination of traditional materials, exquisite craftsmanship (all of the cane parts were initially hand-woven), and modern curves, this series, which came to be known as King’s Furniture, appealed to eminent customers outside of Denmark as well. The King’s Furniture was at one point used by Vaclav Havel and can now be seen in Danish embassies and other official buildings all over the world.
To be continued.
