Bundled Payments—Looking Beyond the Episode
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2848037

Medicare spending costs taxpayers over $1.1 trillion, representing the second largest item in the federal budget. With rising health care spending, Congress created the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) in 2010 to test approaches to improve the value of health care by reducing spending and maintaining or improving quality. Accordingly, CMMI created several alternative payment models (APMs), including bundled payments, shared savings models, and capitated payments. The Oncology Care Model (OCM), which ran from 2016 to 2022, is one example of an APM created to test whether an episode-based bundled payment for systemic cancer therapy could improve the value of care for patients with cancer.
