A Cabinet Office survey revealed on August 20 that if the Meteorological Agency issues a “Major Earthquake Warning” for a potential Nankai Trough megaquake, at least 520,000 residents — mainly the elderly — would be required to evacuate one week in advance to prepare for possible tsunamis.😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

This is the first government survey on designated early-evacuation populations. As local governments continue making designations, the number of target areas and residents is expected to rise further. The warning is issued when an M8-class quake occurs in the trough and the likelihood of subsequent massive quakes is judged to increase.
