🐟 Hokkaido Unloads First 173 Tons of Sanma Caught by Purse Seine This Season

On August 15, nine large fishing boats unloaded about 173 tons of Pacific saury (sanma) at Hanasaki Port in Nemuro, Hokkaido — the first nationwide shipment this season using the main purse seine method. Fishermen reported healthy numbers of fish in the sea, raising hopes for a good catch this year.🤔🤔🤔

At local auctions, the highest price reached ¥2,900 per kilogram ($19 USD), with fish averaging 130–140g — larger than last year’s 100g size. Despite this promising start, Japan’s total 2024 catch was only 38,695 tons, around 10% of the 2008 peak, and authorities expect similarly low overall numbers this year.😐😐😐
