Narrated through a chain of trustworthy narrated from Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام), that Imam Ali ibn Husain (عليه السلام) used to say:

"Whosoever among the believers sheds tears for the killing of al-Husayn bin Ali (عليه السلام) such that they flow down his cheek, Allah will accommodate him because of it in the lofty chambers of Paradise, wherein he shall stay for ages.

And whosoever among the believers sheds tears such that they flow down his cheek for the sake of us—due to the harm that befell us from our enemies in this world—Allah will accommodate him because of it in an honorable place of truth in Paradise.

And whosoever among the believers suffers harm for our sake, and his eyes shed tears such that they flow down his cheek due to the pain of the harm he endured for us, Allah will avert harm from his face and grant him security on the Day of Resurrection from His wrath and from the Fire."

‏حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (ع)
قَالَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) يَقُولُ أَيُّمَا مُؤْمِنٍ دَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ لِقَتْلِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّع دَمْعَةً حَتَّى تَسِيلَ عَلَى خَدِّهِ بَوَّأَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ غُرَفاً يَسْكُنُهَا أَحْقَاباً وَ أَيُّمَا مُؤْمِنٍ دَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ حَتَّى تَسِيلَ عَلَى خَدِّهِ فِينَا- لِأَذًى مَسَّنَا مِنْ عَدُوِّنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا بَوَّأَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ مُبَوَّأَ صِدْقٍ وَ أَيُّمَا مُؤْمِنٍ مَسَّهُ أَذًى فِينَا فَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ حَتَّى تَسِيلَ عَلَى خَدِّهِ مِنْ مَضَاضَةِ مَا أُوذِيَ فِينَا صَرَفَ اللَّهُ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ الْأَذَى وَ آمَنَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ سَخَطِهِ وَ النَّارِ

~ The Smallest Martyr ~

From Ziyarat al-Nahiyah containing the names of the Martyrs of Karbala:

Salutations upon Abd-Allah the son of Husayn (عليه السلام), the infant, the nursing baby, who was shot and made to fall to the ground and who was drenched/soaked with blood, whose blood was raised to skies; who was slaughtered (zabH) by an arrow in the arms of His Father.

May Allah curse the one who shot arrow at him - Harmala bin Kahil al Asadi and his companions.

السَّلَامُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الطِّفْلِ الرَّضِيعِ الْمَرْمِيِّ الصَّرِيعِ الْمُتَشَحِّطِ دَماً الْمُصَعَّدِ دَمُهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ الْمَذْبُوحِ بِالسَّهْمِ فِي حَجْرِ أَبِيهِ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ رَامِيَهُ حَرْمَلَةَ بْنَ كَاهِلٍ الْأَسَدِيَّ وَ ذَوِيهِ

From Ziyarat al-Nahiya al-Muaqaddasah narrated to have come from Imam Mahdi (عليه السلام) through one of his deputies:

اَلسَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ ,سَلامَ الْعارِفِ بِحُرْمَتِكَ، الْمُخْلِصِ في وِلايَتِكَ، الْمُتَقَرِّبِ إلَى اللهِ بِمَحَبَّتِكَ، الْبَريءِ مِنْ أعْدائِكَ،

Salutations upon you, Salutations from the one who recognizes your sanctity, who is a sincere (believer) in your mastership [Wilayah], who seeks nearness to Allah through your love, and who has disassociated [Tabarrah] from your enemies.

سَلامَ مَنْ قَلْبُهُ بِمُصابِكَ مَقْرُوحٌ، وَ دَمْعُهُ عِنْدَ ذِكْرِكَ مَسْفُوحٌ،

Salutations from the one whose heart is wounded due to your tragedies, and whose tears flow in your remembrance.

~ Qasim ibn Hasan (as) ~

From Ziyarat al-Nahiyah containing the names of the Martyrs of Karbala:

"Salutations upon al-Qasim bin al-Hasan bin Ali (عليهم السلام), who was struck upon His head and whose armor was looted and when He called upon His uncle Imam Husain (عليه السلام) (for help) and the Imam rushed towards Him like an eagle and found Qasim (عليه السلام) rubbing the mud with his legs and Imam Husain (عليه السلام) was saying, "Away with the people who have killed You, their opponents on the day of Judgement will be Your Grandfather and Father.

It is very painful for Your uncle, that You called Him (for help) and He could not answer Your call and when He reached, you were already killed. By Allah, this is a day on which killers are many while helpers are less.

May Allah include me with both of You on the gathering (Qayamah) and make me reside along with both of You and Curse of Allah be upon Your killer, Umar bin Sad bin Urwah bin Nufayl al-Azdi and send him to hell and prepare a painful punishment for him."

السَّلَامُ عَلَى الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْمَضْرُوبِ عَلَى هَامَتِهِ الْمَسْلُوبِ لَامَتُهُ حِينَ نَادَى الْحُسَيْنَ عَمَّهُ فَجَلَا عَلَيْهِ عَمُّهُ كَالصَّقْرِ وَ هُوَ يَفْحَصُ‏ بِرِجْلَيْهِ التُّرَابَ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ يَقُولُ بُعْداً لِقَوْمٍ قَتَلُوكَ وَ مَنْ خَصْمُهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ جَدُّكَ وَ أَبُوكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَزَّ وَ اللَّهِ عَلَى عَمِّكَ أَنْ تَدْعُوَهُ فَلَا يُجِيبَكَ أَوْ أَنْ يُجِيبَكَ وَ أَنْتَ قَتِيلٌ جَدِيلٌ فَلَا يَنْفَعَكَ هَذَا وَ اللَّهِ يَوْمٌ كَثُرَ وَاتِرُهُ وَ قَلَّ نَاصِرُهُ جَعَلَنِيَ اللَّهُ مَعَكُمَا يَوْمَ جَمَعَكُمَا وَ بَوَّأَنِي مُبَوَّأَكُمَا وَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ قَاتِلَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ الْأَزْدِيَّ وَ أَصْلَاهُ جَحِيماً وَ أَعَدَّ لَهُ عَذَاباً أَلِيماً

From Ziyarat al-Nahiya al-Muaqaddasah narrated to have come from Imam Mahdi (عليه السلام) through one of his deputies:

سَلامَ مَنْ لَوْ كانَ مَعَكَ بِالطُّفُوفِ، لَوَقاكَ بِنَفْسِهِ حَدَّ السُّيُوفِ، وَ بَذَلَ حُشاشَتَهُ دُونَكَ لِلْحُتُوفِ،
Salutations from the one, who, had he been present with you in al-Taff [Karbala], would have defended you from the sharpness of the swords with his body and sacrificed his last breath for you,

وَ جاهَدَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ، وَ نَصَرَكَ عَلى مَنْ بَغى عَلَيْكَ، وَ فَداكَ بِرُوحِهِ وَ جَسَدِهِ وَ مالِهِ وَ وَلَدِهِ،
and would have fought alongside you, helped you against the aggressors, and sacrificed his soul, body, wealth, and children for you

وَ رُوحُهُ لِرُوحِكَ فِداءٌ،
His soul be sacrificed for yours,

وَ أهْلُهُ لِأهْلِكَ وِقاءٌ،
and his family be a protection for your family.

Narrated that al-Abbas ibn Ali (عليهما السلام) said the following when he went to battle:

"I do not fear death, when death comes,
Until I am laid to rest among the brave men.
My life be a shield for the pure soul of Mustafa,
Indeed, I am Abbas, the bearer of water,
And I do not fear evil on the Day of gathering [judgement]."

لَا أَرْهَبُ الْمَوْتَ إِذِ الْمَوْتُ رَقَى‌ 
 حَتَّى أُوَارَى فِي الْمَصَالِيتِ لَقَا
نَفْسِي لِنَفْسِ الْمُصْطَفَى الطُّهْرِ وَقَا
إِنِّي أَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ أَغْدُو بِالسِّقَا
وَ لَا أَخَافُ الشَّرَّ يَوْمَ الْمُلْتَقَى‌

And when his right hand was cut off, al-Abbas (عليه السلام) said,

"By Allah, even if you cut off my right hand,
I will forever defend my religion,
And will defend the the Imam certain in his truth,
The grandson of the pure and trustworthy Prophet."

وَ اللَّهِ إِنْ قَطَعْتُمُ يَمِينِي‌
إِنِّي أُحَامِي أَبَداً عَنْ دِينِي‌
وَ عَنْ إِمَامٍ صَادِقِ الْيَقِينِ‌
نَجْلِ النَّبِيِّ الطَّاهِرِ الْأَمِينِ‌

~ Our blood for Imam Husain (as) ~

From a Ziyarat of Imam Husain (عليه السلام) as taught by Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام):

يا ليتني كنت معك فأفوز فوزا عظيما، وأبذل مهجتي فيك، وأقيك بنفسي، وكنت فيمن أقام بين يديك حتى يسفك دمي معك، فأظفر معك بالسعادة والفوز بالجنة

"I wish I had been there with You, so that I would have achieved a great victory, and I would give the blood of my heart for You and I would protect You with my life. I wish I was among those who stood before You until my blood is shed along with You and I would have earned success along with you and obtain Paradise."

From Ziyarat al-Nahiya al-Muaqaddasah narrated to have come from Imam Mahdi (عليه السلام) through one of his deputies: 

السَّلامُ عَلَى المدفونين بلا أكفان

Salutation be on those who were buried without shrouds.

السَّلامُ عَلَى الرؤوس المُفَرْقَةِ عَنِ الأبدان

Salutation be on the heads that were separated from their bodies.

السَّلامُ عَلَى المحتسب الصابر

Salutation be on the one who sacrificed hoping for reward from Allah, and was steadfast.

السَّلامُ عَلَى المظلوم بلا ناصر

Salutation be on the one who was oppressed, [and left] without any supporter

Narrated that Imam Ali ibn Husain (عليه السلام) said,

When Imam Husain (عليه السلام) granted permission to His companions on the night of Ashura to leave Him, saying that all of them will be killed the next day, The companions of the Imam said to Him:

الحمد لله الذي شرّفنا بالقتل معك

"All praise is for Allah (عز و جل), who gave us distinction/honor by being killed along with You."

~ Fasting on Ashura ~

As part of a long narration 

The narrator says I asked Imam Jafar Sadiq (عليه السلام), "O master, what do You say about fasting on this day?" 

Imam replied, "Fast on it, but do not make the intention from the night before, and break the fast without joy. Do not fast for the complete day; break the fast with some water after the after noon (asr) prayer. For, this was around the time on that day when the attack against the family of Allah's Messenger (عليهم السلام) came to an end, and the slaughter against them was removed.

فَقُلْتُ: يَا سَيِّدِي فَمَا قَوْلُكَ فِي صَوْمِهِ؟ فَقَالَ لِي: صُمْهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ تَبْيِيتٍ، وَ أَفْطِرْهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ تَشْمِيتٍ، وَ لَا تَجْعَلْهُ يَوْمَ صَوْمٍ كَمَلًا وَ لْيَكُنْ إِفْطَارُكَ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ بِسَاعَةٍ عَلَى شَرْبَةٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ، فَإِنَّهُ فِي مِثْلِ ذَلِكَ الْوَقْتِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ تَجَلَّتِ الْهَيْجَاءُ عَنْ آلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَ انْكَشَفَتِ الْمَلْحَمَةُ عَنْهُمْ

Narrated from Imam Baqir (عليه السلام) part of a long narration on the Ziyarat of Imam Husain (عليه السلام) on day of Ashura:

The narrator said, 

I asked Imam Baqir (عليه السلام), How should they console one another?"

Imam replied: They should say, "May Allah maximize our rewards for our grief over Al-Husayn (عليه السلام), and may He place us and you among those who avenge his blood alongside his representative, Imam al-Mahdi from the family of Muhammad (عليه السلام)."

قَالَ قُلْتُ فَكَيْفَ يُعَزِّي بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضاً قَالَ يَقُولُونَ:
عَظَّمَ اللَّهُ أُجُورَنَا بِمُصَابِنَا بِالْحُسَيْنِ(ع)وَ جَعَلَنَا وَ إِيَّاكُمْ مِنَ الطَّالِبِينَ بِثَأْرِهِ مَعَ وَلِيِّهِ الْإِمَامِ الْمَهْدِيِّ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ(ص)

~ Dress of grief on Ashura ~

Narrated that Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said as part of a long narration about day of Ashura:

"O Abd Allah ibn Sinan, The best thing one can do on this day is to take pure (tahir) clothes & wear them and comeout dressed as someone in grief/mourning."

I (the narrator) asked, "How should one dress as one in grief/mourning?"

Imam (عليه السلام) replied, "Keep the buttons undone, and roll up your sleeves leaving your arms revealed, as the grieving people do.

يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ سِنَانٍ إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ مَا تَأْتِي بِهِ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ أَنْ تَعْمِدَ إِلَى ثِيَابٍ طَاهِرَةٍ فَتَلْبَسَهَا وَ تَتَسَلَّبَ، قُلْتُ: وَ مَا التَّسَلُّبُ؟ قَالَ: تُحَلِّلُ أَزْرَارَكَ وَ تَكْشِفُ عَنْ ذِرَاعَيْكَ كَهَيْئَةِ أَصْحَابِ الْمَصَائِبِ

~ What life after the Martyrdom of Imam Husain (عليه السلام) ~

Narrated that Abbas ibn Ali (عليه السلام) said the below when he went to bring water on the day of Ashura:

"O my soul, after Husayn (as), (life is) worthless,
And after him, you should not even exist."

يا نفس من بعد الحسين هوني
وبعده لا كنت أن تكوني

Zaynab bint Ali (عليها السلام) said the following over the body of Imam Husain (عليه السلام):

"O Muhammad (ص), May the angels in the sky send blessings on You. Here lies Husain (ع), covered in blood, with His limbs cutoff."

يا محمداه صلى عليك ملائكة السماء هذا حسين مرمل بالدماء مقطع الأعضاء

From a Ziyarat of Imam Husain (عليه السلام) as taught by Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام):

Then put your cheeks on the grave of Imam Husain (ع) and say:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ الْحُسَيْنِ اشْفِ صَدْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ

O Allah, the Lord of Husain (ع), heal the heart of Husain (ع)

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ الْحُسَيْنِ اطْلُبْ بِدَمِ الْحُسَيْنِ

O Allah, the Lord of Husain (ع), seek (revenge) of the blood of Husain (ع)

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ الْحُسَيْنِ انْتَقِمْ مِمَّنْ رَضِيَ بِقَتْلِ الْحُسَيْنِ

O Allah, the Lord of Husain (ع), take revenge from those who are satisfied/pleased with the Killing of Husain (ع)

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ الْحُسَيْنِ انْتَقِمْ مِمَّنْ خَالَفَ الْحُسَيْنِ

O Allah, the Lord of Husain (ع), take revenge from those who opposed Husain (ع)

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ الْحُسَيْنِ انْتَقِمْ مِمَّنْ فَرِحَ بِقَتْلِ الْحُسَيْنِ

O Allah, the Lord of Husain (ع), take revenge from those who were happy with the Killing of Husain (ع)

From Ziyarat of Farewell (wida) of Imam Husain (عليه السلام) as taught by Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام):

"I ask Allah, who made my eye cry over you, to make it (my crying) a support (sanad) for me."

أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي أَبْكَى عَلَيْكَ عَيْنِي أَنْ يَجْعَلَهُ سَنَداً لِي

Part of a long hadith as narrated from Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله) talking about Imam Husayn (عليه السلام):

“As for al-Husayn (عليه السلام), He is from Me, He is My son and My child.

He is the best of the creation after His brother.

He is the leader (Imam) of the Muslims,

The Master (Maula) of the believers,

The vicegerent (Khalifa) of the Lord of the Worlds,

The helper of those who seek help,

The cave for those who seek refuge,

The Proof (Hujjah) of Allah upon His whole creation,

The Master of the Youth of Paradise,

And the Gate of Salvation for the community (Ummah).

His order is My order, His obedience is My obedience. Whomever follows Him is of Me, and whomever disobeys Him is not of Me.

And indeed, when I saw him, I remembered what would be done to him after me. It is as if I see him seeking protection in my sanctuary and my proximity, but he is not protected. So I draw him to my chest in his sleep and command him to depart from the land of my migration [i.e. Medina]. And I give him the glad tidings of martyrdom, so he journeys forth to the land of his slaughter and the place of his killing - the land of grief and affliction [Karb & Bala], of killing and destruction.

A group of Muslims will support him; they are among the masters of the martyrs of my nation on the Day of judgement.

It is as if I am looking at him as he is struck by an arrow, falling slain from his horse, then slaughtered unjustly like a ram is slaughtered."

"Then the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) cried."

وَ أَمَّا اَلْحُسَيْنُ فَهُوَ مِنِّي وَ هُوَ اِبْنِي وَ وَلَدِي وَ خَيْرُ اَلْخَلْقِ بَعْدَ أَبِيهِ وَ أَخِيهِ وَ هُوَ إِمَامُ اَلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَ مَوْلَی‌ اَلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ خَلِيفَةُ رَبِّ اَلْعَالَمِينَ وَ غِيَاثُ اَلْمُسْتَغِيثِينَ وَ كَهْفُ اَلْمُسْتَجِيرِينَ حُجَّةُ اَللَّهِ عَلَی‌ خَلْقِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ وَ هَذَا سَيِّدُ شَبَابِ أَهْلِ اَلْجَنَّةِ وَ بَابُ نَجَاةِ اَلْأُمَّةِ أَمْرُهُ أَمْرِي وَ طَاعَتُهُ طَاعَتِي مَنْ تَبِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَ مَنْ عَصَاهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي وَ إِنِّي لَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُ تَذَكَّرْتُ مَا يُصْنَعُ بِهِ كَأَنِّي بِهِ قَدِ اِسْتَجَارَ بِحَرَمِي وَ قَبْرِي فَلاَ يُجَارُ فَأَضُمُّهُ فِي مَنَامِي إِلَی‌ صَدْرِي وَ آمُرُهُ بِالرَّحْلَةِ عَنْ دَارِ هِجْرَتِي وَ أُبَشِّرُهُ بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَيَرْتَحِلُ عَنْهَا إِلَی‌ أَرْضِ مَقْتَلِهِ وَ مَوْضِعِ مَصْرَعِهِ أَرْضِ كَرْبٍ وَ بَلاَءٍ وَ قِيلَ وَ فَنَاءٍ يَنْصُرُهُ عِصَابَةٌ مِنَ اَلْمُسْلِمِينَ أُولَئِكَ مِنْ سَادَاتِ شُهَدَاءِ أُمَّتِي يَوْمَ اَلْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَ قَدْ رُمِيَ بِسَهْمٍ فَخَرَّ صَرِيعاً ثُمَّ يُذْبَحُ كَمَا يُذْبَحُ اَلْكَبْشُ مَظْلُوماً ثُمَّ بَكَی‌ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ صَلَّی‌ اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ

~ Painful hearts ~

Narrated that Imam Sadiq (ع) said as part of a lengthy hadith:

"And surely the one whose heart pains for Us, will certainly be delighted/happy when he sees Us at the time of his death, such a happiness that will not end from his heart until he returns to Us at the pool (Hawz)."

وان الموجع قلبه لنا ليفرح يوم يرانا عند موته فرحة لا تزال تلك الفرحة في قلبه حتى يرد علينا الحوض
