UPI Charges Introduced for Large Merchant Payments

India’s UPI system is set to introduce a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on certain merchant transactions above ₹2,000 from 15 October 2026.
The move ends the long-standing zero-fee model for some larger merchant payments.

Key Points:
📅 Effective: 15 October 2026
💳 Fee: 0.4% MDR on specified P2M (Person-to-Merchant) UPI transactions above ₹2,000.
👤 Consumers: Will not be charged the fee directly.
🆓 P2P transactions: Remain completely free, regardless of amount.
🛍 Payments up to ₹2,000: Remain free.
🏪 Small merchants meeting the specified threshold are exempt.
💰 The fee is intended to support the long-term sustainability of the UPI ecosystem.
