The Palitana temples of Jainism are located on Shatrunjaya hill by the city of Palitana in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, India. The city of the same name, known previously as Padliptapur, has been dubbed “City of Temples”. Along with Shikharji in the state of Jnarkhand, the two sites are considered the holiest of all pilgrimage places by the Jain community. As the temple-city was built to be an abode for the divine, no one is allowed to stay overnight, including the priests. Jains believe that a visit to this group of temples is essential as a once in a life time chance to achieve nirvana or salvation.

This site on Shatrunjaya hill is considered sacred by Jains and have hundreds of temples. There are approximately 863 marble-carved temples on the hills. The main temple is reached by stepping up 3500 steps.

Just imagine the advanced technology used by our ancestors to create such extraordinary ancient marvels. There is a completely spherical ball inside the mouth of the statue of Yali. The ball can freely move inside, it can be easily rotated but cannot be pulled out of the mouth.

Similar statues can be seen in many temples in Tamil Nadu and other southern part of India, often sculpted onto the pillars and entrance. It may be portrayed as part lion, part elephant and part horse, and in similar shapes.

The Kailashanatha temple is the largest of the rock-cut Hindu temples at the Ellora Caves, Maharashtra, India. A megalith carved from a rock cliff face, it is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in the world because of its size, architecture and sculptural treatment, and "the climax of the rock-cut phase of Indian architecture".

The top of the superstructure over the sanctuary is 107 feet above the level of the court below, although the rock face slopes downwards from the rear of the temple to the front. Archaelogists believe it is made from a single rock.

The Chausath Yogini Temple, also called the Golaki Math is one of India's yogini temples, but exceptionally it has shrines for 81 rather than the usual 64 yoginis. The group of 81 is a mark of royalty, implying that the temple was founded by a king.
