The Chennakeshava Temple of Belur, is a 12th-century Hindu temple in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE, on the banks of the Yagachi River in Belur also called Velapura, an early Hoysala Empire capital.

The temple was built over three generations and took 103 years to finish. It was repeatedly damaged and plundered during wars, repeatedly rebuilt and repaired over its history. It is 35 km from Hassan city and about 200 km from Bengaluru.

Galtaji is an ancient Hindu pilgrimage about 10 km away from Jaipur, Rajasthan. A natural spring emerges high on the hill and flows downward, filling a series of sacred kunds (water tanks) in which pilgrims bathe. It is believed that a Saint named Galav lived here, practiced meditation, and did penance.

Since the early 15th century Galtaji has been a retreat for Hindu ascetics belonging to the Vaishnava Ramanuja sect. It is said to have been in the occupation of yogis for a long time; Payohari Krishnadas, a Ramanandi sadhu, i.e. a follower of the Ramanandi Sampradaya came to Galta in the early 15th century and, by his yogic powers, drove away other yogis from the place.

Galta was northern India's first Vaishnava Ramanuja Peeth and became the one of the most important centres of the Ramanuja sect.

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur ❤️ .

The Chennakesava temple is a fine example of fine quality work of art in stone. There are more than 80 Madanika sculptures in the temple, dancing, hunting, standing under canopies of trees and so on. The 4 Madanika figures (striking elegant dancing poses) on the wonderfully engraved columns of Navaranga are unique creations of Hoysala workmanship. The Garbhagriha is stellar in shape and its zigzag walls make the figures of 24 forms of Vishnu look different at different times of the day due to light. The temple was built by master craftsmen – Dasoja and Chavana, a father and son duo, hailing from Balliganve, a centre of Kalyana Chalukya art in Shimoga district. It is said that Shantaladevi, the accomplished queen of King Vishnuvardhana is the model for one of the sculptures in the vavaranga- Darpana Sundari.

A rare and beautifully carved early Vijayanagara period Lakshminarayana vigraha found near Shettihalli in Tumkur district, Karantaka while digging the ground for underground drainage work. The Invaders have damaged the Vigraha at the time of invasion. Notice the Dashavataras carved on the Prabhavali. The locals have kept the Vigraha in front of a renovating ancient temple.
