I woke up , got ready and by 8am I was inside the magnificent Chenna Keshava Temple. This temple was built in 1116AD by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana to mark his victory against the Cholas & is dedicated to Vijayanarayana an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
This temple complex consists of a 443.5ft x 396ft court with several Hindu temples and minor shrines inside it. This temple stands on a star shaped platform. The temple artwork depicts scenes of life in the 12th century; There are numerous friezes of dancers & musicians as well as pictorial narration of Hindu texts Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas. It is a Vaishnava temple that reverentially includes many themes from Shaivism and Shaktism, as well as images of a Jina from Jainism and the Buddha from Buddhism. The Chennakeshava temple is a testimony to the artistic, cultural and theological perspectives in 12th century South India and the Hoysala Empire rule.
The Chennakesava temple is a fine example of high quality work of art in stone. There are more than 80 Madanika (damsel depicted in sculptural form) sculptures in the temple, dancing, hunting, standing under canopies of trees and so on. The 4 Madanika figures on the wonderfully engraved columns of Navaranga are unique creations of Hoysala workmanship. It is said that Shantaladevi, the accomplished queen of King Vishnuvardhana was the model for one of the sculptures in the Vavaranga – Darpana Sundari.
The building material used in the Chennakesava temple is chloritic schist, more commonly known as soapstone. It is soft when quarried and allows artists to more easily carve details. Over time the material hardens.
The intricacy & beauty of the sculpture was among the best, I have seen so far.
Until then please enjoy my story and the pictures and most importantly, stay safe and be smiling….

This mammoth and beautiful Kumaraswamy temple in #Bellary district, has some peculiar domes/ temple tops, very unusual as compared to other temples in the country.
Built by Chalukyas and subsequently Rashtrakutas, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Karthikeya. Check out the domes of Karthikeya Temple, Lord Ganesha sitting at top.

Seated Ganesha.
India (Orissa), 14th–15th centurys Ivory.
This ivory statuette depicts Ganesha, Hindu god of auspiciousness. Details suggest that this ivory sculpture of the elephant-headed god was carved in the Orissa region in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. The Hindu god of auspiciousness, elephant-headed Ganesha is one of the most popular gods in India. He removes all obstacles, so devotion to him is important to assure auspicious beginnings in such ventures as starting a business, getting married, beginning a new school year, creating a work of art, or taking a long trip.

An extremely rare sculpture of a 9th century 4 headed Bhagwan, Kashmir.
This sculpture form of Vishnu Ji, first referred to by the name #Vaikuntha in the 7th century Vishnudharmottarapurana, is four-faced (chaturmurti), with the heads of a lion (right) and a boar (left) flanking a human head.
He is also identifiable in this form by the epithet Para-Vasudeva, “the highest god.” The lion & boar represent Vishnu’s Varaha & Narasimha avatars. Carved in low relief on the back of the halo is the 4th face, a demonic, grimacing representation with fangs & a vertical 3rd eye on the forehead. The small attendant on Vishnu’s left is Chakrapurusha, the personification of his war discus, originally balanced on his right by Gadadevi, the female personification of his battle mace. The earth goddess Prithvi, stands between Vishnu’s legs.

Think how beautiful the whole temple would have been when one pillar is so beautiful.
The first ray of the sun in this temple falls on the Shivalinga located in the womb of the temple. The temple's architecture is such that the first ray of dawn falls on the Shivling of Lord Bholenath, tearing the small door of the observatory, mandap and the womb. As the sun rises, we pray to Bholenath and ask for permission to spread light in the world.
In the past, this temple was surrounded by eight small temples and a huge fourdivari. Turkish invaders attacked this temple in 1336-38 and built a mosque near it with its remains.
