BREAKING: CBS News reports that President Trump is consulting advisers on potentially replacing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following the GOP's heavy losses in the November 4, 2026 midterm elections, where Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress.
The poor Republican performance is widely attributed in part to the ongoing U.S. military involvement in the Iran conflict, with Vice President JD Vance publicly stating "the reason we lost is the war" and some aides pointing blame toward military leadership under Hegseth.
White House officials maintain Trump has full confidence in Hegseth, who has pursued aggressive reforms including firing numerous senior officers and reversing prior Pentagon policies, though Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been mentioned as a potential successor amid renewed Democratic impeachment threats.
