I worked on a project related to Hansen’s disease—what we used to call leprosy. Brazil has the second highest number of cases after India.
It’s not just a medical condition; there’s so much societal stigma attached to it. Back in the day, people showing symptoms were just taken away and placed in isolated settlements called “leper colonies.”
I met a 96-year-old woman who had never seen her child. She was diagnosed in her teens, became a teenage mother, and then was taken away. Even after she was treated, she couldn’t return to society because of the marks the disease left. That day, I broke down.
