She stood firm through two wars, refusing to abandon her home in Mansouri just a few meters from the beach and the sea turtles she watched over for a quarter century.
Environmental activist Mona Khalil, 76, founder of the Orange House Project and a prominent figure in marine turtle protection along the Sour coast, succumbed to her injuries Friday caused by an Israeli strike that directly hit her family home on June 4.
She regained consciousness the day after the attack before her condition gradually deteriorated. She had been hospitalized for two weeks at AUBMC in Beirut, after being transferred from Jabal Amel Hospital in the south, according to Fadia Joumaa, an environmental activist from Sour, contacted by L'Orient-Le Jour. "Doctors tried in vain to save her in recent days," she added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that Israel’s only interest is “permanent war,” responding to remarks by the extremist Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir calling for Lebanon to be “burned” after four Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon.
In a post on the US social media company X, Araghchi said Ben-Gvir’s comments were “not a rant by a random genocidal lunatic” but “a public post by the national security minister of the Israeli regime.”
“The genocidal death cult headquartered in Tel Aviv is a threat to all of humanity,” Araghchi wrote. “It threatens all humans. Its only interest is permanent war.”
His remarks came after Ben-Gvir called for a major escalation in Lebanon following the Israeli army’s announcement that four soldiers had been killed in combat in southern Lebanon.
“With all due respect to the Americans, Israel must make it clear to the entire world that the blood of our sons and the security of our citizens are not forfeit. All of Lebanon must burn,” Ben-Gvir wrote on X.
He added that he had told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “even in our private meetings” that “for every tear of an Israeli mother, a thousand Lebanese mothers must weep.”
“Enough with the ping-pong. In the Middle East, you don’t win with measured responses and restraint—you need to go berserk. To obliterate. To crush the terror,” Ben-Gvir said.
Despite a US-Iran deal that includes provisions aimed at ending hostilities in Lebanon, Israeli intensified strikes after midnight.

‼️An interesting report out of Israel today…
According to Channel 12, the Trump administration has opened back channel communications with Israeli opposition figures Naftali Bennett and Gadi Eisenkot.
The message could not be clearer: Washington is no longer treating Benjamin Netanyahu as the only political future of Israel.
For months I have argued that we may have been interpreting events backwards. That the conflict was never primarily about Iran, but about a fundamental reshaping of Israel itself.
Every war changes the balance of power. The question is always: who emerges stronger?
Israel has suffered unprecedented military, economic, diplomatic and reputational damage. The aura of invincibility that surrounded Netanyahu’s government has been shattered. International criticism continues to grow. Political divisions inside Israel are widening.
Now reports emerge that the Trump administration is quietly establishing lines of communication with the very people who could replace him.
This could be a signal that preparations are already underway for a post Netanyahu era.
Either way, it reinforces a question that becomes harder to ignore with each passing week:
What if this entire conflict has been rebalancing power in the region rather than consolidating it?
The coming months may provide the answer.

💢 Ukraine hopes, through terrorist attacks, to drag Belarus into a military conflict — and later all of Europe — Oleg Gaidukevich, deputy chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus. He stressed that the republic will never fall for provocations.
Subscribe @NewResistance
“They understand: if we drag Belarus in, that means we drag all of Europe in, and then the conflict will be prolonged, power will be prolonged, we’ll make more money, we’ll sit in power longer. Their task is to prolong the escalation at any cost. How do we act? We will never fall for provocations; we understand perfectly well that they want to drag Belarus into the conflict,” Gaidukevich said.

For once some news that isnt shitty..
A faecal microbiome transplant (FMT) could make an aged brain as adaptable as a young one. Our gut microbiome has been linked to our risk of depression and may even play a role in shaping our personality. But for the first time, a study has shown that older mice given the gut microbiomes of younger animals via an FMT experience improved brain plasticity. This suggests that they could overcome a condition similar to amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, which is typically only successfully treated in childhood.
“This study suggests that microbial communities may help regulate critical periods of brain development by defining when developmental windows of heightened plasticity open and close,” says Parisa Gazerani at Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway, who wasn’t involved in the work. “It suggests that the gut microbiome may be an active developmental partner that helps shape neural circuit maturation alongside sensory experience, immune activity and genetic programming.”
Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to remodel itself, means that conditions like amblyopia can be treated in children by temporarily covering their stronger eye. This forces the brain to forge new connections to the weaker eye, improving overall vision. But plasticity peaks at a young age, decreasing as our brains naturally prune unused connections during adolescence.
