I Used an 1800s Plow and Discovered Something Historians Missed
Building an 1800's Wild West off grid homestead with hand tools was not easy. Join me as I explore the topics of sod homes and the sod plows that helped settlers built them.

How To Open A Can With a Spoon
It only takes 1-2 mins. Here's how:
Step 1. Set the can on a sturdy surface, ideally at the height of your hips. Hold the can firmly in place with one hand, while the spoon is in the other.
Step 2. Your grip around the spoon should be firm, so that it doesn’t…

Tale of two electric cords... I left the shop garage door open where we have wife's car and a freezer. Dogs got inside and laid on the extension cord, pulling it partially out of the wall. We lost all the meat in that freezer. Fortunately, it's a beer fridge and freezer and there's not much meat in it... just some venison. I found it because of the smell..... now I get to pressure wash the freezer out.
Could have been avoided by using a flat plug head design. Maybe I'll just move the beer fridge from the workshop to the basement.

Pull your kids from the public schools. Here in SC, we've had no child left behind which says "all students must perform at grade level" since 2001. 25 years. 2 entire generations of students... 25 graduating classes... and.... the State Dept of Ed released this statement: How this year’s results compare In the previous academic year, about 60 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in English language arts, up from nearly 54 percent the year before. Math scores also improved but remained lower than English language arts. About 44 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in math in the prior academic year. State education leaders say the overall goal of the assessment is to have at least 75 percent of students performing at or above grade level by 2030.
We slowed the classes to that of the slowest kid, we allowed the smartest kids to wither on the vine. We put bored fidgety boys on ADD head meds and have an entire genertion of young men on meth living on the streets.... and hte dept of Ed says "four more years" and we'll be 75% of the way there.

Regarding the post above... back in the 80's one of the neighbors was a stay home dad since wife made more than him. So he looked after their daughter until she was school age. He did a lot of wood working. So daughter is in school and teacher wants a conference. Says the girl knows all her shapes except square. She keeps drawing an L.

What a difference a year makes. The last two years have been droughts. We started feeding hay in June both prior summers all the way until spring. Hundreds of bales just for our little herd. This year... we have actual rain!
The spring was dry and then starting at the end of June... the rains started. We received more rain this summer in NC than in the prior two... combined... times 3. Lol. The pastures exploded and all of the regenerative work we've been doing paid off! The land held on to more water (less runoff), it soaked in dramatically quicker, and it was available for the grass for longer due to the improved organics in the soil.
We haven't fed one bale of hay yet this summer and if things continue... we wont feed until winter. We're talking about thousands of dollars saved compared to prior years and better fresh forage! Praise God!
