Just did some experimentation with the meshcore radios this morning. I had to go back here in the group and edit a post I made that said to avoid the Heltec T096.
I have found that the FEM (front end module) on the Heltec T096 is finicky. It seems to either cause increased RX noise or outright mutes the receiver. You can issue the command SET RADIO.FEM.RXGAIN OFF to disable it.
example... with FEM RXgain ON, the noise floor was showing at -100db (unusually noisy.). I switched the FEM RXgain off and noise floor improved to -116db. You may recall that eariler this week I noted a 16db difference in link margin... I think I found it. At another point this morning, I switched FEM RXGain ON and the noise floor went to -120db which indicates a dead (muted) receiver. So the FEM module is flakey.
Actually the heltec with the FEM disabled seems to have a 4db receiver advantage over the RAK 4631.

How cheap can these things get? The Sense Cap unit I bought for $130 is based on the Xiao chipset.... it's literally 1/2" square and sells for $13. Add an external antenna connector and a $12 antenna alongside some solar patio light that uses a 4.2v battery and you are off and running for potentially $35-$40 per repeater.

XIAO nRF52840 & Wio-SX1262 Kit for Meshtastic
This kit combines the XIAO nRF52840 and Wio-SX1262, supporting BLE5.0 and LoRa (862-930MHz), and operates with low power consumption. It can be applied in various fields such as Meshtastic, sensor networks, environmental monitoring, asset tracking, education…
Minimalist mesh radio.
I got a 3/4" pvc plug with a mounting ear printed to adapt the solar patio light to fit a standard 3/4" pvc conduit Tee. The battery and on/off switch is in the solar panel housing. That leaves a lot of room in the conduit coupler for that small RAK4631 board.
I swappd out the 18650 battery that came with the solar light for a higher capacity 18650 but that one didn't have a nipple on the positive end. So I did have to put a bubble of solder on the battery holder terminal.
There's a drain hole in the bottom of the PVC Tee and a drain hole in the bottom of the solar panel housing.

A Goat Milking Stand
If you milk goat isn't all that cooperative, here's a goat milking stand you can build yourself for minimal expense that will hold her securely.

Cheap mesh repeaters... if you have a solar patio light that already charges a 18650 battery, then you can use the seeed studio xiao module for $23. https://a.co/d/04WBxe5e
Otherwise if you want to build something that needs a solar charge controller, get the RAK 4631 starter kit. https://a.co/d/03hLSa40 .
I tested several 900mhz "fold over" antennas yesterday and they had an SWR of 1.5:1 when straight and 1.2:1 when bend at 45 and 90 degrees.
I'm just a sucker for a "real" antenna. You can find fiberglass 5.8db 900mhz antennas for around $32-$35. They will be around 18inches long. Be aware you will need a short cable to adapt the IPEX connector on the mesh boards to an N connector.

Forwarded from Ice Age Farmer
Wheat exploded in price yesterday (limit up) after USDA forecast that over 8 million acres of HRW (Hard Red Wheat) will be abandoned in the Great Plains
That's 37% of planted acreage reported in the March Prospective Planting report, and means U.S. farmers this year will harvest their smallest wheat crop since 1972.
This comes on top of already record-low planted acreage heading into the season (lowest since 1919 in some metrics). Global supplies are tightening too.
Expect bread, pasta, baked goods, and processed foods to climb in the coming months — and pressure on livestock feed could push meat/dairy prices higher as well. This is another brick in the wall of rising food costs.
Grow your own food — that is the answer. Stock seeds, expand the garden, learn to preserve, and connect with local growers.
