Spent another day working on friend’s shipping container walls. Got his end wall on with rough opening for an exterior door that is recessed in the end of container 2ft to give him a dry place to stand to unlock door.

Thanks to BlinddogJones for showing up to help as well. Had a good lunch and got a fair amount of work done.

In case any of you ever needed to know this. Previously, I found a table from the UK using stones for weight.... this one in pounds with a convient calculation.

Only in America. Dragging us kicking and screaming in to metric system. I have seen units in a paper mill that were ml per gallon before. Lol.

Group member's dual 12000xp setup. Nicely done. Things are labeled which makes supporting him over the phone a snap! This system will make 24kw and 48kw on peak.

He replaced his meter base outside with an integrated meterbase/feed thru 200amp panel. The 50amp breaker is for his HVAC heat strips that are a bit too much to run from his batteries. The breakers labeled INV1 and INV2 are grid power just incase he needs to charge batteries from grid. The output of the inverters will go to a transfer switch in his house that allows him to select quickly between inverters running the place and grid power running the place. It's a smart move to allow bypassing the inverters for maint.

We are putting metal siding on the house. A week ago I used a diamond blade to cut a groove in concrete porch surface. Yesterday we finished installing horizontal lats in the the ICF blocks. Today I find that the groove I cut is just too narrow to pracitcally put the Z flashing into because of the hem on the bottom of the flashing. We we tried cutting it off with hand grinder, powered sheet metal shears. Everything deforms to damages the metal. Tried grinding the groove to be 1/4" wide and that's not practical. So the solution is to bend my own Z flashing with a break.... but I can't get the correct color of metal in the state of SC.

Many months ago, I had watched a youtube video where a guy went to a metal roof fabrication shop where they have all the dies to make many profiles of ribbed roofing... they have the coils of the correct color material. I got a bid from them to make me 23 10ft long Z flashings in the correct color with no hem on the bottom.... and I'll drive to ATL in two days to get them.

If you end up doing a lot of fabrication an aluminum Bender for siding is a good thing to have on hand. I had my house trim covered with aluminum probably 25 years ago, and it's getting ready to be needing redone.

Meshcore update...

I can report that a Heltec T096 with GPS turned on and a 4000mah battery (pretty large battery) will last 3-1/2 days. Now that I've run it down, I'll recharge and test it without the GPS running. I expect it will last for over a month.

The GPS unit that is built in is pretty darn good. Inside my house I'm tracking 32-35 satellites, it seems to get a fix before the T096 main processor can boot up. I do wish meshcore companion app had more intelligent GPS power management.... Maybe turn GPS on every 8 hours to get a fix and go back to sleep until someone requests a position from your tracker. Presently, it seems the GPS runs 100% of the time and that's a waste.

Compare and contrast how meshcore and meshtasic handle GPS data.

with meshtastic you can setup your GPS to beacon on an encrypted chat that only you and your family have. No one else can see your position and you can program it to transmit at some interval like 10minutes. I'm not sure there are any smarts here so it'll just send a position packet every 10 minutes forever. Imagine a guy leaving his car in the driveway all night transmitting.

meshcore doesn't like to clutter the radio with automatic transmissions, so anyone who wants to know your position will have to request a positon from you. You can control who gets to see your position. This method means that your location is only sent when someone wants to see it. Saves a lot of radio airtime.

A note about mesh core's philosophy. Although it is nice to see a map full of repeaters, MC prefers you program your repeater to advertise itself thru the network between 12 and 47 hours. Your repeater can advertise itself directly to users in a given area every 1hour to 12 hours.

The point is we don't want to tie up the network with a lot of repeater advertisements. ADVERTS are the longest packets because they include GPS location of the public encryption key of the repeater.

Since the radio is a finite resource, MC would rather not have the radio filled with GPS plots of lots of repeaters, but rather have a clear channel for when you want to send a message to someone.
πŸ‘4❀3
I'm breaking this down into small chunks....

For meshcore to route a message it does not actually need to know the GPS location of nearby or distant repeaters.

When you send a message, each repeater along the way tags your message with a (fairly) unique fingerprint. By the time a message ping pongs thru the network, there may be 5 or 6 versions of that packet with a different set of "fingerprints". The first packet that ping pongs by chance to the person you are messaging will be used to determine the path back.

Upon receiving a message from you, the distant station will simply reverse the order of the repeater "fingerprints" and use that to construct a reply message along a very specific list of repeaters.

This is another way MC saves radio air time. Once the path between to stations is known, any communications between those two stations exists only in a line between them. This leaves the rest of the network available for other people to message each other.

If our messages ever fail to make it, we will once again try to send a message without a specified path that will ping pong all over until it finds the other station again.

So.... knowing the position of a repeater on a map is NOT necessary but it is neat to see a map full of stations.
