The Battle of Clontarf occurred exactly 1,011 years ago.

In 1014 AD Gaelic Irish forces, united under High King Brian Boru, successfully routed a host of Norse Viking invaders intent on expanding their foreign influence over the Irish nation.

On the beaches of Clontarf, the foreign Viking invaders were dealt a mortal blow.

The heroic sacrifice of all who fought on this day entered into the annals of Irish history through "Cogad Gáedel re Gallaib" (“The War of the Irish with the foreigners”), and is one of countless examples throughout Irish history proving that one of the truest characteristics of a great leader is to possess a sacrificial love of one's nation.

The willingness of a leader to die so that their nation may live, to pay in blood what money can’t buy, is a quality worth more than gold.

It is right that we remember Irish heroes, both sung and unsung, who fought for no reason other than this love of nation.

Cherry Orchard out in strength this evening to oppose the industrial estate units 64 & 65 being used to house asylum seekers.

However, Cllr Hazel De Nortúin from People Before Profit has posted on facebook that the document circulating online which prompted the rally was a planning application from over a year ago which was turned down.

She then took aim at her constituents for 'causing mayhem'.

"I've been looking and some of the people commenting and sharing this fake document and you know that you haven't been the model neighbour and caused your own mayhem in this community so why don't we start there. AGAIN, I'll say. As a women living in Ireland, the most unsafe place for a woman to be is in her own home. Stop trying to scare people into lynching someone when I've never seen half these people uplift their community."

Sinn Féin TD Mark Ward also stated he received confirmation the plan is no longer under consideration.

There's some disagreement with the rally attendance figures today.

RTÉ reports "more than 5,000" attended the rally, with 2,000 counter-protesters at the GPO. Meanwhile, rally organiser Malachy Steenson claimed 50,000 showed up and I get why he’d say that.

In 2023, both RTÉ and the Irish Times uncritically parroted a claim that 50,000 people had attended an anti-racism themed 'Rally for All'. RTÉ cited an organiser’s estimate without scrutiny, while the Irish Times flatly stated it as fact.

Yet compare the photos above taken from the drone footage in 2023 and the drone footage today. The Rally for All crowd was no larger than today’s rally.

Using the streetcam footage, I tallied 6,500–10,000 marchers today with ~1,000 counter-protesters at the GPO. But if Official Ireland is still committed to the rubber-stamp job they did on the 50,000 count for the Rally for All in 2023, they should at least be consistent and use Malachy's 50,000 count for the rally today.
