๐Ÿ›ฐ Can AI Run in Space? Google Is About to Find Out

Alphabet launched its homegrown AI chips into orbit on Thursday in a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, a step towards making data centers in space a reality. SpaceX has promoted supercomputers in space as the next frontier in AI infrastructure, touting โ€œinfinite real estateโ€ in orbit.

The launch window opened at 11:15 am PT from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Californiaโ€™s Santa Barbara County, with liftoff occurring without incident. SpaceX successfully deployed all payloads on board by 1 p.m. local time. ๐Ÿ‘

The Thursday launch marks the first in-orbit test for Alphabetโ€™s Project Suncatcher, a โ€œmoonshotโ€ initiative Google first revealed in November 2025. The company aims to develop reliable, solar-powered AI computing infrastructure that can operate continuously in space. ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿง‘โ€โš–๏ธ Newsom Signs First-of-Its-Kind Bill Governing Lawyer AI Use

California has enacted first-in-the-nation legislation to regulate attorneysโ€™ use of generative AI tools in their work, banning them from delegating the practice of law to AI and restricting their entry of confidential or personal information into AI tools.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed the bill (SB 574) to codify and expand on state court rules. It requires attorneys to verify all citations before filing briefs in court, including those generated by AI tools, and for at least one attorney to sign every court filing in their individual name, unless the party is representing themselves without an attorney.

It also calls for attorneys to disclose when theyโ€™ve used generative AI to create any document filed with the courts.

Theyโ€™re banned from entering confidential or personal information into open-access AI tools, but they can enter information into tools that are โ€œrestricted to the attorney and persons authorized by the attorney under obligations to protect the confidentiality,โ€ according to text of the law.

The new law prescribes similar limits on arbitrators, barring them from delegating their decision-making process to AI tools and from relying on AI-generated information without disclosing it to the parties involved in the case. The law also sets parameters for courts to issue sanctions for violations.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿค‘ Ripple Launches RLUSD Insurance Pilot for Ugandan Farmers

Ripple; Womenโ€™s World Banking, a nonprofit organization; and Pula, an agricultural insurance technology (insurtech) company, have launched a pilot project to deliver parametric insurance to approximately 3,000 smallholder farmers in Ugandaโ€™s refugee and host communities, with a focus on women.

โžก๏ธ The initiative is titled Harnessing Technology for Womenโ€™s Financial Resilience in Uganda. The pilot combines parametric insurance design from Pula with settlement technology from Ripple.

โžก๏ธ When a predefined shock occurs, such as drought, crop loss, or a health emergency, payouts are triggered automatically. Beneficiaries receive funds in Ugandan shillings through mobile money without filing claims or waiting for manual approval.

RLUSD serves as the backend settlement layer. The settlement process operates in the background, while deposits and withdrawals continue in local currency. Farmers interact only with the mobile-money channel they already use.

A massive step forward for financial inclusion and blockchain utility. ๐Ÿš€

โšก๏ธ๐Ÿง‘โ€โš–๏ธ Sanders, AOC, Merkley propose bill to ban Flock cameras

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sens. Bernie Sanders and Jeff Merkley released text of legislation intended to ban the use of Flock surveillance cameras and other license plate readers.

The Ban Flock Act would bar federal agencies from using automated license plate readers or accessing data from the technology and prevent federal grants from funding states and local governments that use automated license plate readers.

โ€œAt a time of growing concern about the unchecked power of AI, Flock is eviscerating the very notion of privacy by installing tens of thousands of cameras in communities across America without their consent,โ€ โ€” Sanders said.

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿง‘โ€โš–๏ธ Japan court rules voice is protected as publicity right in AI cloning case

A Japanese court ruled that voices are protected as a publicity right, similar to portrait rights, in the first such ruling in the country.

The Tokyo District Court, however, dismissed the demand by the plaintiff, voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda, for the operator of TikTok to take down videos narrated using artificial intelligence with a voice that he claimed was similar to his own. Tsuda is best known for voicing the character Kento Nanami in the anime "Jujutsu Kaisen."

Japan does not currently have laws that clearly stipulate voice rights, but the Justice Ministry has recently laid out guidelines stating that uploading videos to social media that use voices similar to those of real people and generating revenue from them may constitute a rights violation.

๐Ÿค– Bill Gates says companies that replace human labor with robots should have to pay the same FICA taxes

Bill Gates has a plan to ensure that humans keep getting paid in an AI jobs apocalypse: Tax the robots. The billionaire philanthropist said that "society gets to decide" how to support its workers โ€” even if AI is pushing them out.

"You define a unit of labor and say, independent of whether that's delivered by a human or robot, you are paying the same FICA tax that a human worker would pay," โ€” Gates said, referring to the US payroll tax.

FICA taxes work by having workers pay portions of their paychecks toward benefits like Social Security and Medicare, with employers matching the workers' contributions. Taxing robots that take human jobs would ensure both a monetary safety net for citizens and continued tax revenue for the government, Gates said.

๐Ÿง  Neuralink Advances BCI Technology

Neuralink says its clinical trial participants have now used implants for more than 50,000 hours, creating a large dataset of intracortical neural activity.

The company says this data has been used to pretrain a foundation model for BCI, with early results including:

๐ŸŸฃCalibration reduced from 10 minutes daily to 10 minutes weekly for some users
๐ŸŸฃCursors that can jump directly toward intended targets
๐ŸŸฃA new cursor-control record of 11.32 bits per second

Neuralink says future work will focus on combining data across participants, one-shot or zero-shot calibration, and an API for the motor cortex.

The next generation of BCIs is taking shape. ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ NYC is now the first city in America that bans sketchy subscriptions

New York City residents struggling to get out of recurring subscription fees can now submit complaints to the city government. As of Thursday, the cityโ€™s click-to-cancel rule has taken effect, which requires businesses to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up.

โžก๏ธ That means a gym that lets you join online, for example, canโ€™t make you call or go in person to end your subscription.

Itโ€™s the first municipality to see the rule take effect, after an appeals court struck down a federal version for procedural issues. The city expects it to save New Yorkers anywhere from $21.5 million to $162.5 million annually.

โ€œNo one should need 45 minutes of hold music to stop paying for something they never wanted,โ€ โ€” NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

โ€œIf a company can take your money with one click, you should be able to get your money back with one click. And now, if they wonโ€™t let you cancel, the City is coming for them.โ€

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ ECB outlines three models for putting central bank money onchain

The European Central Bank is looking at three ways to bring central bank money onchain, Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel said on Thursday at the Bank of Englandโ€™s Future of Money conference in London.

๐Ÿ‘‰ One option would have the central bank issue reserves directly on a programmable platform.

๐Ÿ‘‰ In another, the ECBโ€™s existing real-time gross settlement system would remain in place, with an interoperability layer connecting it to DLT platforms. The reserves would not themselves be tokenized, but the two systems would be linked by hash.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The third approach would tokenize reserves held at the central bank and issue settlement tokens fully backed by those reserves. Those tokens would be private claims, rather than claims issued directly by the central bank, per the presentation.

โ—๏ธSchnabel also addressed how an onchain monetary system could retain the two-tier structure used today. Central bank money would remain at the core of settlement, while commercial banks would continue to provide money and financial services to customers.

That structure would put central bank money on DLT infrastructure alongside tokenized financial assets, including securities and deposits, as well as stablecoins.

๐Ÿ’ธ The Financial Literacy and Education Commission Releases the 2026 Update to the U.S. National Strategy for Financial Literacy

The U.S. Department of the Treasury applauded the release of the 2026 update to the U.S. National Strategy for Financial Literacy from the FLEC, which is chaired by the Secretary of the Treasury and is composed of the heads of 23 federal agencies and the White House Domestic Policy Council.

โ€œThe newest U.S. National Strategy for Financial Literacy is a roadmap to help every American build the knowledge and skills needed to achieve financial security for themselves and their families,โ€ โ€” said Secretary Scott Bessent.

โ€œThe advent of Trump Accounts demonstrates what this approach looks like in practice. By giving young Americans and their families an opportunity to save and invest together, we can make financial education tangible, help a new generation establish sound financial habits from an early age, and build the knowledge and confidence to participate in our financial markets.โ€

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Argentina to Offer Citizenship for $350,000 in South American First

Argentina's government launched a scheme it hopes will attract wealthy investors and simultaneously "further strengthen the Argentine Republic's fiscal and financial position," offering people the chance to apply for citizenship via investment and thus bypass the more typical procedures.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Cabinet chief Diego Santilli launched the citizenship-by-investment program amid the "Argentina Week" business event in Paris, saying it would start accepting applications during the fourth quarter of 2026.

"This announcement is part of Argentina's drive toward international openness and integration, accompanied by reforms aimed at strengthening the investment climate and attracting capital," โ€” the Economy Ministry said.

โ—๏ธUnder the plan, foreigners can obtain citizenship either by making a contribution to the state worth hundreds of thousands of dollars or by purchasing government bonds.

The contribution has been set at $350,000 (about 470 million won) for the main applicant. Family members can apply at an additional cost of $100,000 for a spouse and $25,000 for each child under 18, bringing the total for a family of four to $500,000 (about 670 million won). The bond route is more expensive, requiring the purchase of $800,000 (about 1.08 billion won) in government debt per person.
