๐Ÿค– These Mini Power Plants Aim to Make Green Fuel, Using the Air Around Them

On a quiet industrial estate, engineers at British startup Rivan Industries are working to perfect a system to produce synthetic natural gas from water, sunlight and air.

Their work involves splitting hydrogen from water and capturing carbon-dioxide directly from the air, then combining the two gases to make green methane, a cleaner substitute for natural gas, the source of energy for around a quarter of European households. The entire process takes place in a modular unit, a sort of self-contained mini-power plant, powered by solar energy and that Rivan plans to mass produce.

๐Ÿค– Scientists Just Cracked a Quantum Mystery That's Puzzled Physicists For Decades

The Kondo effect is one of the most important in quantum physics, describing the strange interference that magnetic atoms can have in metals.

Usually, as metals cool, they become better at conducting electricity, because the reduction in energy means electrons can flow more smoothly. Add in a magnetic atom or two, though, and below a certain temperature (the Kondo temperature), electrical resistance starts to rise again.

But in a physics first, researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Yale University in the US have managed to precisely quantify the effect in a real material via fundamental physics calculations.

๐Ÿ“„ The work, published in Science, represents a significant step forward. Previously, scientists had to use real-world experiments and simplified models to pin down the Kondo effect, without getting predictions as precise as the new method.

"We are in an exciting era in which faithful predictive quantum descriptions of the full chemical complexity of real materials are coming within reach," โ€” says chemist Linqing Peng, from Caltech.

๐Ÿ’Š California startup says it has injected AI-designed virus into humans

An AI research lab Radical Numerics in California has administered a custom AI-designed virus into a human patient for the first time as a potential scalable solution to counter antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

If verified, the treatment, named Omnii-1, could mark the first time AI-designed bacteriophages have been administered to a human patient. These phages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria. Antibiotic-resistant superbugs are projected to cause nearly 40 million deaths by 2050.

Radical Numerics claims that their AI-driven approach can lead to rapid, on-demand generation of phages that meet patient requirements, accelerating the timeline for treatment.

โ€œThis milestone marks an early step toward translating AI-guided genome design into personalised therapies,โ€ โ€” Radical Numerics said.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Hassett Says US-Canada Trade Talks Are โ€˜Very Closeโ€™ to Deal

Top White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said US-Canada trade negotiations have โ€œpicked upโ€ and are โ€œgathering steam,โ€ two days after the Trump administration modified Canadian tariffs to benefit some Maine businesses.

โ€œI think itโ€™s very close to finally having a deal on that,โ€ โ€” Hassett, the White House National Economic Council director, said, adding that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick โ€œhas been talking to his Canadian counterparts all week.โ€

๐Ÿ—บ Proton hosts map of 300,000 Flock devices amid legal threats

Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN, is hosting a public map showing more than 300,000 Flock surveillance devices across the United States. The map draws on an inventory obtained by cybersecurity researcher Joshua Michael from Flockโ€™s own systems. According to Proton, it includes more than 170,000 cameras and over 130,000 other devices.

Proton is offering another way to inspect Flock Safetyโ€™s footprint, whose automated license plate readers are used by police and private customers. The systems record passing vehicles regardless of whether their drivers are suspected of an offense, creating searchable records of plates, locations, and timestamps. Vehicle characteristics can also help identify cars without a readable plate.

โšก๏ธAnthropic begins countdown to IPO with prospectus filing

Anthropic filed for an IPO on Monday morning, aiming to take the company public in November. The prospectus showed first-half 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion and a net loss of $80.7 billion.

Share count and price range remain undisclosed. Previous reports have suggested a raise of as much as $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation.

โ€œWe believe that AI is one of the most consequential technologies in human history,โ€ โ€” said the company.

โ€œIf managed well, it could rapidly accelerate scientific innovation, greatly increase economic growth rates, bring cures for major diseases within reach, and solve problems that have resisted generations of human effort.โ€
