U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said digital assets could help strengthen the U.S. dollar's global dominance as technology becomes an increasingly important source of American economic influence.
Speaking Tuesday at Ripple's Swell conference with CEO Brad Garlinghouse, Bessent argued that the power behind the world's reserve currencies during history derived from military strength, but itβs increasingly shifting toward technological leadership.
"We will keep our military umbrella, but I think more and more it's becoming a technology umbrella," β Bessent said.
"I think that digital assets are going to be no different, and we are going to win in the digital asset stack, and that's gonna continue to fortify the [U.S.] dollar," β he said.

Pontoro Inc. today announced the launch of the first Pontoro Automated Liquidity Pool (ALP), a single investment pool that pairs liquid money market assets with private market funds and uses rules-based pricing to manage liquidity between them, on the Stellar network.
The ALP is designed to supply that missing liquidity layer, and to connect the pieces already in place into functioning market infrastructure. π§©
"Private markets have engineered nearly every layer of their infrastructure except one: liquidity," β said Antonio Vitti, CEO and Co-Founder of Pontoro.
"Tokenization has given private assets better rails. A market also needs capital, a price, and a mechanism for managing that capital as conditions change. That is the missing layer the ALP is designed to provide.π
With a group of institutions contributing across the investment and operating stack, we can now move that idea from architecture to a live pilot."

It is important to maintain discipline and order in orbit. Both we and our American partners value this, and despite political issues, we work closely together in this field.

Angeion Group, the law firm administering the $16.1 million class action settlement over the June 2025 cyberattack against Columbia, emailed University students on Tuesday with instructions on how to claim their share of the settlement. Claims are due Jan. 21, 2027.
In June 2025, a hacker stole the contact information, Social Security numbers, health data, and financial aid data of around 870,000 individuals, including Columbia applicants, affiliates, and nonaffiliated prospective students. The University created the $16.1 million fund to pay claimants as part of a deal to settle a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of individuals whose data was stolen.
Affected individuals can claim benefits of up to $8,500 in value by submitting a claim form on Angeionβs dedicated case website.

Archax, the UK/EU/US regulated digital asset platform, today announced β¬GOVY, a euro-denominated version of its perpetual tokenised government bill product, on the Stellar network.
β¬GOVY is designed to give treasurers, asset managers and other eligible institutions 24/7 on-chain exposure to short-dated euro-area government debt through a single token. Because the maturing bills roll automatically, holders do not need to redeem or reinvest at each maturity date. It joins $GOVY, launched in June 2026 on Ethereum, Hedera and the Stellar network.
Graham Rodford, CEO and co-founder of Archax, comments:
βInstitutions donβt run on one currency, and their collateral shouldnβt either. With the launch of β¬GOVY, a treasurer will be able to hold tokenised government exposure in dollars, sterling and euros β earning yield and ready to deploy at any hour of any day.
Launching on the Stellar network, at Meridian, also reflects how important the network has been to GOVY from day one.βπ

Backed by a three-year SEC no-action letter from December 2025, it starts with Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries, promising faster settlements and a bridge between traditional finance and blockchain.
DTCC CEO Frank La Salla called it the result of years of work for regulated tokenized securities. The era of 24/7 markets has arrived.

Most blockchains process transactions in one strict, global order. Some have found ways to run unrelated transactions in parallel, but the moment two transactions touch the same state or require the same data, they fall back into line. Adding hardware doesn't change that β extra machines sit idle while transactions wait their turn.
We're just getting started, and we want you to test it, push it, and show us what you'd build if compute stopped being a limit.
Our mission is equitable access to the global financial system. Not just the one we have today, but the one we'll have in fifty years. Serving ten billion people, and the billions of AI agents that will transact on their behalf, will take far more compute than any blockchain has today.

Movantis, the unified financial infrastructure platform that enables businesses to move value across global markets, announced an integration with the Stellar network.
βCross-border payments do not need one winning rail. They need infrastructure that can use the right rail for each leg of the transaction,β β said Robert Gatto, CEO of Movantis.
βStellar gives us another efficient way to settle, and our job is making sure that speed turns into dollars a business or a family can actually use in El Salvador.β

San Diego officials are considering a temporary ban on new data centers amid growing concerns that the rapidly expanding industry could strain the city's electricity grid, drive up utility bills and worsen its housing shortage.
The move comes after a local developer floated plans for a massive 400-megawatt data center near Old Town that, if built, could become the largest facility of its kind in California. According to reporting by Voice of San Diego, the proposed facility could consume as much electricity as more than 320,000 homes.
Mayor Todd Gloria said the city needed to balance technological development with protecting residents from the potential consequences of large-scale data centers.
"San Diego is a city of innovation, and I want us to continue leading in the technologies and jobs of the future," β Gloria said. "But we cannot allow a rapidly expanding industry to get ahead of the rules needed to protect our residents."

The incident was discovered during a security test conducted under Anthropic's programme for outside researchers to identify vulnerabilities.
According to a draft report, Cathedral used AI agents to find weaknesses in business software used by Anthropic for administrative and sales tasks. The researchers found ways to access internal data, including meeting transcripts and Slack messages, after running their agents for less than 12 hours.

The US placed an effective ban on imports from the Chinese genomics powerhouse BGI Group and two related entities, one of the most striking applications yet of a law seeking to block goods allegedly made by forced labor from entering the country.
The Department of Homeland Security added BGI Group, its publicly traded genomics-testing unit BGI Genomics Co., and the spin-off MGI Tech Co. to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List, according to a Federal Register notice posted Wednesday.
The designation creates a presumption that the companiesβ goods are made with forced labor and canβt enter the US unless importers prove otherwise.
