Quantum computing may be approaching its biggest milestone yet: generating meaningful commercial revenue, according to IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, who said the technology is close to becoming a business rather than simply a long-term research project.
Speaking on CNBC's Mad Money, Krishna said he expects the sector to begin making a measurable contribution to IBM's revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029.
"By the end of the 2030s, we are now pretty convinced this is a trillion dollars of value," โ Krishna said, describing what he sees as the long-term economic potential of quantum computing.
IBM has already demonstrated some of that potential, using quantum computers to uncover properties of materials that conventional computers had been unable to model. Those insights could eventually contribute to longer-lasting batteries, new materials, fusion energy research and drug discovery.

As President Trump has said, record investment is pouring into the U.S. Thanks to President Trump's leadership โ from digital assets and technological innovation to restoring American manufacturing โ we are pulling away from the rest of the world," โ said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

"Senators and staff across the aisle have spent months addressing hard questions about jurisdiction, investor protections, and developer safeguards. The framework that emerged protects investors, shields legitimate developers from overreach, and provides the certainty Americans deserve.
After months of bipartisan work, the industry is ready for CLARITY."๐

Less than 48 hours after announcing the integration of its AI image generator, Nano Banana 2, into Google Earth, Google said it was pausing the feature "while we work on implementing stronger guardrails." Experts raised concerns about potential misuse and the spread of misinformation.
The retracted feature enabled users to use text prompts to generate false scenarios on top of a base layer of real satellite, aerial or 3D imagery โ which could then be downloaded and shared on other platforms.

The XRP Ledger's next software release will put five new features in front of validators, two of which were pulled from the network after security researchers found flaws serious enough to warrant emergency action.
"XRPL has already proven it can support tokenized assets at scale. Now itโs time to put these assets to use: global transfers, trading, collateralizing, and settling.
The upcoming release of xrpld 3.3.0 includes five amendments that move XRPL significantly closer to that goal," โ said Jazzi Cooper.๐

From 2 August 2026, the European Commission's AI Office, together with national authorities, will begin enforcing the AI Act. New transparency rules will start to apply, requiring certain AI systems to tell users when they are interacting with AI and when content has been generated or altered by it.
The Commission published today a first list of more than 180 organisations that have signed the Code of Practice on transparency of AI-generated content that operationalises the rules on transparency of AI-generated content.

Yiannis Levendis, a professor at Northeastern University, has developed a robotic firefighting prototype that uses liquid nitrogen to rapidly extinguish wildfires without harming the environment. The system is designed to reach hazardous fire hotspots that may be difficult or unsafe for firefighters to access, offering an alternative approach to early wildfire suppression.
Levendis observed that liquid nitrogen could rapidly extinguish flames by expanding into gas and reducing the oxygen available for combustion. Unlike conventional wildfire retardants, the cryogenic approach leaves no chemical residue, potentially reducing environmental impacts on soil and nearby water bodies.
To deliver the cryogenic agent, the research team built an all-terrain robotic platform equipped with caterpillar tracks and a spray system. The prototype is being evaluated on controlled fires using vegetation commonly found in wildfire-prone forests in the western U.S.
