Carter Church published a proposed solution to a letter addressed to Napoleon's marshal Auguste de Marmont, saying GPT-6 Astra helped transcribe and decode the cipher in about six hours of model execution. Church's full write-up includes the key, transcription and a script intended to reproduce the reading.
"The letter to Marshal Marmont opens with one line of plain French, then 24 rows of numbers, letters and invented symbols. It sat on Cryptiana's Unsolved Historical Ciphers list for decades. Last week, Satoshi Tomokiyo officially confirmed this solution and marked it solved," — Carter Church said.
Astra read the image, reconciled handwritten variants, incorporated an existing partial key and used a simulated-annealing solver to assign values to the remaining signs. 🤯

Alphabet launched its homegrown AI chips into orbit on Thursday in a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, a step towards making data centers in space a reality. SpaceX has promoted supercomputers in space as the next frontier in AI infrastructure, touting “infinite real estate” in orbit.
The launch window opened at 11:15 am PT from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California’s Santa Barbara County, with liftoff occurring without incident. SpaceX successfully deployed all payloads on board by 1 p.m. local time.
The Thursday launch marks the first in-orbit test for Alphabet’s Project Suncatcher, a “moonshot” initiative Google first revealed in November 2025. The company aims to develop reliable, solar-powered AI computing infrastructure that can operate continuously in space.

California has enacted first-in-the-nation legislation to regulate attorneys’ use of generative AI tools in their work, banning them from delegating the practice of law to AI and restricting their entry of confidential or personal information into AI tools.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed the bill (SB 574) to codify and expand on state court rules. It requires attorneys to verify all citations before filing briefs in court, including those generated by AI tools, and for at least one attorney to sign every court filing in their individual name, unless the party is representing themselves without an attorney.
It also calls for attorneys to disclose when they’ve used generative AI to create any document filed with the courts.
They’re banned from entering confidential or personal information into open-access AI tools, but they can enter information into tools that are “restricted to the attorney and persons authorized by the attorney under obligations to protect the confidentiality,” according to text of the law.
The new law prescribes similar limits on arbitrators, barring them from delegating their decision-making process to AI tools and from relying on AI-generated information without disclosing it to the parties involved in the case. The law also sets parameters for courts to issue sanctions for violations.

Ripple; Women’s World Banking, a nonprofit organization; and Pula, an agricultural insurance technology (insurtech) company, have launched a pilot project to deliver parametric insurance to approximately 3,000 smallholder farmers in Uganda’s refugee and host communities, with a focus on women.
RLUSD serves as the backend settlement layer. The settlement process operates in the background, while deposits and withdrawals continue in local currency. Farmers interact only with the mobile-money channel they already use.
A massive step forward for financial inclusion and blockchain utility.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sens. Bernie Sanders and Jeff Merkley released text of legislation intended to ban the use of Flock surveillance cameras and other license plate readers.
The Ban Flock Act would bar federal agencies from using automated license plate readers or accessing data from the technology and prevent federal grants from funding states and local governments that use automated license plate readers.
“At a time of growing concern about the unchecked power of AI, Flock is eviscerating the very notion of privacy by installing tens of thousands of cameras in communities across America without their consent,” — Sanders said.

A Japanese court ruled that voices are protected as a publicity right, similar to portrait rights, in the first such ruling in the country.
The Tokyo District Court, however, dismissed the demand by the plaintiff, voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda, for the operator of TikTok to take down videos narrated using artificial intelligence with a voice that he claimed was similar to his own. Tsuda is best known for voicing the character Kento Nanami in the anime "Jujutsu Kaisen."
Japan does not currently have laws that clearly stipulate voice rights, but the Justice Ministry has recently laid out guidelines stating that uploading videos to social media that use voices similar to those of real people and generating revenue from them may constitute a rights violation.

Bill Gates has a plan to ensure that humans keep getting paid in an AI jobs apocalypse: Tax the robots. The billionaire philanthropist said that "society gets to decide" how to support its workers — even if AI is pushing them out.
"You define a unit of labor and say, independent of whether that's delivered by a human or robot, you are paying the same FICA tax that a human worker would pay," — Gates said, referring to the US payroll tax.
FICA taxes work by having workers pay portions of their paychecks toward benefits like Social Security and Medicare, with employers matching the workers' contributions. Taxing robots that take human jobs would ensure both a monetary safety net for citizens and continued tax revenue for the government, Gates said.

New York City residents struggling to get out of recurring subscription fees can now submit complaints to the city government. As of Thursday, the city’s click-to-cancel rule has taken effect, which requires businesses to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up.
It’s the first municipality to see the rule take effect, after an appeals court struck down a federal version for procedural issues. The city expects it to save New Yorkers anywhere from $21.5 million to $162.5 million annually.
“No one should need 45 minutes of hold music to stop paying for something they never wanted,” — NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
“If a company can take your money with one click, you should be able to get your money back with one click. And now, if they won’t let you cancel, the City is coming for them.”

The European Central Bank is looking at three ways to bring central bank money onchain, Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel said on Thursday at the Bank of England’s Future of Money conference in London.
That structure would put central bank money on DLT infrastructure alongside tokenized financial assets, including securities and deposits, as well as stablecoins.
