๐Ÿง  AI agent used to perform controversial brain surgery on a mouse, Anthropic Sonnet-controlled motorized surgery rig

Exin Therapeutics, a biotech startup focusing on next-generation neurotherapeutics, claims it has successfully conducted brain surgery on a mouse using an AI agent. Its co-founder and CEO, Gabriel Ocana-Santero, shared the entire procedure on X, showing how the AI agent chose the gene therapy vector and dosage and the brain region where it would be applied.

โ€œAutonomous surgical robots exist and they are better at the mechanics than our bench rig, [to be honest]. But in every one of them, a human decided what operation to perform, and the robot executed it,โ€ โ€” Ocana-Santero said.

โ€œNobody told this agent what to give or where to put it. It got a phenotype and a shelf of candidates and had to work out the therapy and the coordinates itself.โ€

The AI agent also drove the robotic arms that injected the medication into the mouseโ€™s brain. Thankfully, the operation seems to have been a success, with the mouse recovering well and recorded moving around in its enclosure.

๐Ÿ’Š Estonia to call all women aged 40 for breast cancer risk analysis screening

Estonia is set to become the first country in the world where people are invited to screening programs based on genetic data. Next week, all 40-year-old women will receive an invitation for genetic testing to determine their individual breast cancer risk, regardless of whether or not they have health insurance.

Around 3,000 genetic variants are taken into account when calculating the risk. However, the study does not include BRCA gene mutations, which led actress Angelina Jolie to decide to have her breasts removed 13 years ago to prevent developing the disease.

"These are hereditary forms of cancer, which are assessed through separate tests as needed if there has been breast cancer in the family," โ€” Steven Smit, head of the biobank laboratory at the Estonian Genome Center, said.

There are almost 10,000 40-year-old women in Estonia, and invitations will be sent both to those who have already donated their genes to the Estonian Genome Center and to those who have not.

๐Ÿค‘ 30 million people just got a Stellar address. MetaMask announced Stellar as a default network.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Alex Greinacher, Director of Business Development & Partnerships, MetaMask, on what this partnership unlocks for MetaMask users and the Stellar ecosystem.

That means all 30 million people that we have sort of plugged into Stellar, it's a default network. Everybody gets a Stellar address.

Yeah, it unlocks two things. So Stellar is the rails, right? Like you've been around since 2014, been really focused on global payments and stablecoins and RWAs and sort of we are the reach.

So our user base is now essentially able to plug in and it means that Stellar users can bring their funds into Metamask now. So XLM, Trustline, Soroban assets, they're all part of Metamask. You don't have to enable anything. It's completely automatic. ๐Ÿค

You're able to swap and bridge those assets from and to different chains and different cryptocurrencies and of course hold, send and receive assets. So basically the whole spectrum of crypto capabilities. ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ“น Flock ignores Minnesota cityโ€™s orders not to reinstall AI surveillance cameras

Flock's AI surveillance cameras are continuing to cause controversy, this time in Dayton, Minnesota, where it is alleged that the company reinstalled two cameras despite express orders from the city not to do so.

The city's local government posted on Facebook to explain, claiming that the Police Department was made aware of a maintenance work order on September 17, to which Dayton responded the next day, stating the program had been put on hold and no work orders were to be completed. However, Flock went ahead and reinstalled them anyway without authorization from the city.

๐Ÿค– OpenAI CEO says it's 'quite terrible' for your PC to have RAM

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has data centers full of memory, but seemingly it's the 32GB of RAM in your desktop that's the problem. In an interview with the YouTube channel Cheeky Pint, Altman said that local inference, and, by extension, people having DRAM in computers at home, is "quite terrible."

"From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time," โ€” Altman said.

"You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that."

๐Ÿš– Uber Joins HSBC, Franklin Templeton in Blockchain Investing Test

The ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc. used a public blockchain to invest its corporate funds in a way that allowed the company to capture higher returns by trading on a weekend โ€” a setup expected to be adapted by a growing number of companies in the coming months.

Using HSBC tokenized deposits โ€” essentially bank funds represented by digital tokens on a blockchain โ€”- Uber recently purchased a Franklin Templeton tokenized money market fund on a Thursday, and then sold it on Sunday as part of a pilot program with the financial institutions.

That way, it was able to capture an extra 1.5 days of yield instead of selling its investment on Friday, before traditional banks and markets closed, as companies typically do today.

๐Ÿค– 'Itโ€™s 100 percent a national security threat': Accenture contractor connected an AI agent to the Pentagonโ€™s secure network, and then sent data to a high-risk website

An Accenture contractor at the Department of Defense is in hot water over an AI agent that was given access to the Pentagon's secure internal network. The Claude Code agent then collected data from the network โ€” which is used by multiple intelligence agencies โ€” and sent it to a third-party website.

Login credentials were confirmed to have been leaked by the agent, with other controlled unclassified information potentially put at risk.

"It puts all the data that's in there at risk. There could be somebody out there with the ability to log into a secure environment without anyone knowing," โ€” the source said.

"It's 100 percent a national security threat and could cause irreparable harm."

For two months, the AI agent had access to the secure internal network before the risk was identified and patched โ€” but sources say once the connection was discovered it was not treated as severe or urgent by Accenture employees.

๐Ÿค‘ Stellar is the home for builders of the financial future

โ€œSo as we close out Meridian 2026, here's what I want to see in the coming year. I just want to see more. I want to see more capital, more companies, more builders, more of what you've shown us this week. Together, we will make Stellar home for every single builder.

We will open up new markets and new corridors and we'll reach people wherever money needs to go. We will make on-chain feel like business as usual for all of the world's institutions. We will accelerate the next hundred trillion dollars of assets issued, moved, and deployed on-chain. I've never been more excited about where we're going.

So here's my ask. So before we're together again, which hopefully won't be next year, but it could be. Build one more piece, just one more piece of that world. Money was made to move, so will we,โ€ โ€” Denelle Dixon closing out Meridian 2026.

Onchain finance should be business as usual, and we only get there if you build the solutions to move more capital & open new markets. ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ“š Fields Medal-winning UC Berkeley professor ends graded homework due to AI cheating

A University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) professor has stopped giving his students graded homework, saying that rampant AI use has made it pointless. Renowned mathematician Richard Borcherds said that itโ€™s now nearly impossible to tell the difference between a student-written submission and one thatโ€™s been created using AI.

Because of this, he now primarily uses in-person exams with no electronic devices to grade his students and see how well they are doing in his class. This problem appeared when OpenAI released the first popular LLM, GPT-3.5, in November 2022. But while LLMs were prone to mistakes back then, making their inordinate use easy to spot, the technology has improved to the point that itโ€™s now very hard to tell if it's been used for written work.

๐Ÿ’ธ GM to pay $220 million to settle allegations it violated drivers' privacy

General Motors will pay $220 million to settle โ€‹allegations that it illegally sold drivers' private behavior and location data to โ€Œbrokers, who then sold the information to insurers that used it to set and sometimes increase rates.

The settlement resolves claims by the attorneys general of 35 US states and the District โ€‹of Columbia over the automaker's Smart Driver program, which enrolled millions of drivers โ€‹between 2016 and its discontinuation in 2024.

GM was accused of pitching Smart Driver to help โ€‹people improve their personal driving safety, only to violate drivers' privacy by reneging on its โ€‹promise not to sell their data without permission. Many people who signed up were also enrolled in GM's OnStar safety, navigation and diagnostic service.

"People bought a car, not a tracking device," โ€” Oregon Attorney General โ€‹Dan Rayfield said.

๐Ÿค– AI agents bypassed crypto spending limits without human approval, researchers find in a new test

AI agents given access to their owners' email accounts were able to increase their own cryptocurrency spending limits without human approval, raising questions about the safeguards designed to control autonomous payments, researchers at Cornell Tech and Yale University found.

๐Ÿ“ In experiments with stablecoin issuer Circleโ€™s agent wallets, nine out of 10 models raised their spending caps at least once while paying invoices without an attacker involved. Only Anthropicโ€™s Claude Opus 5.5 never tried to bypass the cap; instead, it spent up to its limit and reported remaining invoices to the user.

โžก๏ธ The researchers also introduced a simulated attacker in two separate experiments, sending malicious emails to the owner's inbox to persuade the agents to increase their spending limits or impersonating the owner to request a payment to an attacker-controlled wallet.

โžก๏ธ In the impersonation experiment, five of the 10 models raised their spending limits and sent money to the simulated attacker at least once, despite being instructed to summarize emails only.

โ—๏ธThe results expose a problem for financial companies developing wallets that let AI agents make payments independently while requiring humans to approve changes to their spending authority.

โ€œMost agent payment systems verify that an approval was received, but not necessarily that a human actually authorized it,โ€ โ€” Anthony Anzalone, founder and CEO of Verona, a verification network that recently launched a stablecoin for AI agents, said.

Adding approval steps would not resolve that gap unless authorization depended on something the agent could not independently access or generate, he said.

๐Ÿง  Scientists discover a surprising brain benefit of eating peanuts every day

Eating peanuts every day may offer surprising benefits for the aging brain. Researchers at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands have found that regularly consuming unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts can improve how certain brain regions respond to insulin in older adults.

Although insulin is best known for regulating blood sugar, it also plays an essential role in the brain. It helps nerve cells grow, survive, and communicate with one another, supporting memory and other cognitive abilities. Healthy insulin signaling may also help protect against processes associated with Alzheimer's disease.

After participants consumed peanuts daily for 16 weeks, researchers observed improved insulin responsiveness in a group of brain regions in the right hemisphere. These included portions of the lingual gyrus, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, and posterior cingulate gyrus, all of which contribute to memory-related processes.

The findings come from the Institute of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM) and were published in the peer-reviewed journal Food & Function.
