The Betrayal of Islam by Hypocrites: A Reflection on Modern and Historical Treachery
Throughout history, the Muslim Ummah has faced challenges not only from external enemies but also from within—through the actions of hypocrites (munafiqoon) who betrayed their own brothers and sisters. These individuals and groups, while outwardly claiming allegiance to Islam, have acted against its principles and caused immeasurable harm to the community.
🔹 Hypocrisy Exposed in the Quran
The Quran explicitly warns against hypocrites, describing their traits and the danger they pose:
🔹 "When the hypocrites come to you, they say, 'We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.' And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars." (Surah Al-Munafiqun, 63:1)
This verse highlights their deception—professing faith while their hearts harbor betrayal.
🔹 "They seek to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive only themselves, and they do not perceive it." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:9)
Hypocrites often act under the guise of benefiting the Muslim community, but their true intentions are to serve worldly desires or align with enemies of Islam.
🔹 The Hadith on Hypocrisy
💠 The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) outlined clear signs of a hypocrite:
✳️ "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust." (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
These traits are evident in individuals and governments that claim to support Muslims yet align themselves with oppressors and aggressors.
🔹 Modern-Day Examples of Betrayal
In today’s world, we witness a continuation of this hypocrisy. Some leaders of Muslim-majority nations pledge solidarity with oppressed Muslims, such as the people of Gaza, yet their actions contradict their words. They maintain political or economic ties with regimes responsible for the suffering of Muslims, turning a blind eye to their plight.
For instance:
While claiming to send aid to Gaza, they allow the blockade to persist.
They export resources to oppressors while their brothers and sisters face starvation.
🔹 The Quran’s Command to Stand with the Oppressed
Islam unequivocally calls for standing with the oppressed:
🔹 "And what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah and for the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper'?" (Surah An-Nisa, 4:75)
🔹 A Call to Action for Muslims
It is the responsibility of every Muslim to identify and resist such hypocrisy. Silence or complicity in the face of oppression is itself a betrayal of Islamic values. The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized unity and solidarity:
✳️ "The believers, in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy, are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever." (Sahih Muslim)
💠 True believers must hold hypocrites accountable, expose their betrayal, and ensure that the rights and dignity of the oppressed are upheld. Let us remember the Quran’s timeless words:
🔹 "Indeed, Allah does not guide the deceitful and ungrateful." (Surah Yusuf, 12:52)
