Researchers electrically power nanophotonic lasers without disturbing light Read Full Article # Nanophotonics #Lasers #ElectricallyPumpedLights
💡 Researchers at UC Berkeley and Berkeley Lab have developed a new method to power nanophotonic lasers with electricity without disrupting their light-controlling structures.

💡 This breakthrough, reported in Nature Nanotechnology, uses an architecture called "orthogonal optoelectronics" to independently engineer electrical pathways and optical modes, solving a long-standing conflict between good optics and good electrical injection.

💡 The team developed a monolithic fabrication process for hundreds of nano-post electrical contacts, placed at points where the light's electromagnetic field is zero, making them electrically conductive but invisible to light.

💡 Uniformity in nano-post fabrication was found to be critical for even current injection across the device, highlighting the need for co-design of optics, electronics, and nanofabrication in future devices.

Physicists have developed the first room-temperature quantum material that could transform quantum computing, overcoming one of the biggest barriers in quantum materials research: the need for bulky cryogenic refrigeration to preserve quantum behavior. Read…
⚛️ LSU physicists have developed the first room-temperature quantum material capable of distinguishing and transporting different quantum states of light, overcoming a major obstacle in quantum materials research. Published in Nature, the work led by Omar S. Magaña-Loaiza establishes a design principle for a new class of quantum materials with potential for quantum computing, secure communications, sensing, and advanced energy systems.

💡 The material, a quantum statistical plasmonic metacrystal, was created by carving microscopic slits into a gold film on a glass chip. These "meta-atoms" manipulate light at room temperature, acting as a statistical filter for quantum states without needing cryogenic cooling.

🔌 This breakthrough enables the robust transport of quantum information and could lead to practical quantum technologies, including more efficient solar cells by reducing energy loss as heat. The team plans to integrate the metacrystal into solar cells to test its potential for increasing electricity generation.

Physicists shatter quantum entanglement distance record with 420 kilometers of optical fiber, more than four times farther than previous demonstrations, and beyond the point where direct transmission runs into its fundamental limits. Read Full Article …
⚛️ Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have achieved a record-breaking 420 kilometers (261 miles) of fiber-based matter-to-matter quantum entanglement, significantly extending the distance for linking quantum memories.

💡 This breakthrough overcomes distance limitations by converting quantum signals to telecommunications wavelengths, using a sophisticated stabilization system to counter interference, and employing a single-photon entanglement scheme.

📈 The experiment demonstrated entanglement rates exceeding the theoretical limit for direct transmission over 320 kilometers, showing the advantage of memory-based quantum networks.
