Today marks the Shaheedi of the Fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji.

Many believe that Guru Ji had only sat on a burning hot iron place. However, Guru Ji was inhumanely tortured for many days before. They were starved and not allowed to sleep. Then, Guru Ji's body was left in the full exposure of the burning sun.

Guru Sahib remained unaffected and were immersed in the love of Akaal Purakh. Chandu (the emperor’s evil governor) then had Guru Ji sit in a cauldron of boiling water. This scalded Guru Ji's body, causing the flesh of the skin to become soft and left blisters all over. By removing Their Dastaar, hot burning sand was also poured on Them.

Then, Chandu had Guru Sahib sit on a burning iron plate for a continuous three hours. The Sikhs who accompanied Guru Ji were unable to witness this torture.

Through all this, Guru Jee said:

ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Your actions seem so sweet to me.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ॥੨॥੪੨॥੯੩॥
Nanak begs for the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||42||93||

ਸੰਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਖਲੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
