🔘 Retweet Offender

What is a retweet offender on Twitter?

◻️A person who constantly retweets on Twitter

A retweet offender is a person guilty of constantly retweeting on Twitter, often to the chagrin of their followers. It is a play on the "repeat offender" that refers to people who have committed the same crime multiple times.

A retweet offender may be passionate about a subject and retweet a series of tweets they think will be informative to their followers or things they generally approve of or like. However, followers may find the retweet offender annoying since they repeatedly fill up feeds with retweets of other users' tweets. To combat retweet offenders, followers may take breaks by temporarily muting, blocking, or unfollowing them altogether.

❓Example
I realized after about a day of following Joe that he was a retweet offender, so I unfollowed him right away.

🔘The Great Resignation

What is the Great Resignation?

◻️People quitting their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic

When people talk about the Great Resignation, they're discussing the trend of workers quitting their jobs during the covid pandemic. These workers may be moving on to similar-yet-new jobs, changing career paths, or dropping out of the workforce entirely.

What drove the Great Resignation?

A lot of things, really. For one thing, the pandemic caused many workers to value themselves and their time more. So, workers who were being treated poorly at their jobs or felt underpaid chose to quit.

The pandemic also caused many workers' jobs to get more stressful (e.g. food service workers dealing with increasingly unruly customers; healthcare workers dealing with constantly full hospitals). Many of these burnt-out employees also quit.

For these and a host of other reasons, including the increasing prevalence of WFH and WFA positions, a record number of workers quit their jobs in 2021. In April 2021 alone, four million Americans quit their jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Where does the name Great Resignation come from?

The Great Resignation is a play on the Great Depression - the name for the worst economic downturn the industrialized world has experienced. Texas A&M professor Anthony Klotz is credited with coining the name Great Resignation, in May 2021. The Great Resignation is also sometimes called the Big Quit.

MTFBWY is a Star Wars acronym that stands for "May the Force be with you." People often send it in messages or online (especially on social media) to encourage others or wish them luck.
The Star Wars (SW) franchise popularized the saying among Jedi, who commonly use it as a farewell. It is uttered throughout the series, typically before a Jedi goes on a mission or, sometimes, right before dying. You might say MTFBWY is similar to religious persons saying "God bless you" or GBY.

May the Fourth

There is a higher chance of encountering MTFBWY on May 4th, as many SW fans have made this "Star Wars Day" to celebrate all things related to the space odyssey, similar to March 10 (Mar10) for Mario fans. On this day, fans may greet you or depart with "May the Fourth be with you" or send MTFBWY (where the "F" stands for "Fourth" instead of "Force").

🔘 VSCO Girls

What are VSCO girls?

◻️ Preppy female teen Instagrammers

VSCO girls are a group of female teen Instagrammers and TikTok users who are known for wearing scrunchies, wielding Hydro Flasks, and expressing their desire to "save the turtles." They began appearing on Instagram and other apps in 2019, dressed in largely similar oversized t-shirts, crop tops, and Birkenstocks.

The VSCO girl movement was started by teen girls who edited and posted photos to their Instagrams using the VSCO photo-editing app. The app's filters made it easy for these teens to portray their lives as "beachy," "effortless," and "laid-back." As the VSCO girl trend grew more popular, a number of female YouTubers began creating "transformation videos" detailing their transformations into VSCO girls. These videos often included the YouTubers' search for VSCO girl-appropriate accessories, including Fjallraven Kanken backpacks, metal straws, and flashy scrunchies.

Because VSCO girls are predominantly white, thin, and affluent, and they've adopted slang (like sksksk and "And I oop") that originated in other online communities, reporters and critics have often called the VSCO girl trend exclusionary. VSCO girls themselves are often mocked as being basic, because they cling so strongly to certain brands and social media trends.

❓ Example

"I got my Crocs, my Carmex, and my puka necklace. I'm totes ready to be a VSCO girl."

🔘Whitesplain

What does whitesplain mean?

◻️To explain racism to a person of color

Whitesplain is a term that refers to when a white person tries to explain the true nature of racism to a person of color. It combines "white" and "explain".

Whitesplaining is usually done by oblivious white people with good intentions. They are sharing their perspective but not in a way that conveys understanding of the plight of colored people. It comes across as condescending and totally inappropriate considering that white people have not experienced racism the same way that colored people have, especially in America. Backlash against whitesplaining usually occurs on social media where opinions are more often exchanged.

❓Example

"Did you see his tweet yesterday?
No, was it bad?
Well, do you think whitesplaining racism to a civil rights leader is bad?

◻️Acting stupid

If a person is lunching, or lunchin', as the cool kids say it, they are doing something unintelligent, like playing chicken with an oncoming train or cheating in front of the teacher. It is typically brought on by the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Lunching originates from drug culture in the early-2000s. It plays off the familiar "out to lunch" phrase that describes people who seem not to be fully present, resulting in them making mistakes.
